Baseball Loses At Miami (Ohio)

Five straight hits producing four runs for Miami University in the fourth inning proved to be enough as the Redhawks defeated the Canisius College baseball team 6-2 at McKie Field at Hayden Park in Oxford, Ohio on Tuesday. The Golden Griffins fall to 7-9 on the season.

Canisius took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, stringing together back-to-back two-out hits. Junior Brooklyn Foster singled up the middle, moved to second on a balk and scored on a single up the middle from sophomore Jesse Kelso. The Redhawks (8-7) took the lead in the bottom of the third. Freshman Rohn Pierce retired six of the first seven batters he faced, but Miami used five consecutive singles in the bottom of the third to go up 4-1.

Canisius had runners on base in each of the next five innings, but could never string together enough hits for a big inning. The Griffs hit into double plays to end the fifth and sixth innings. Canisius had the leadoff batter reach in the seventh and the first two batters reach in the eighth, but came up empty on the scoreboard. In the ninth, Kelso led off with a double and junior Manny Hernandez followed with a single to put runners at the corners with no outs. The Griffs then hit into their third double play of the game, scoring Kelso but effectively killing the rally.

Pierce (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings. The freshman righty didn't walk a batter and struck out six. Junior Jason Rubenstein allowed one run in 1.2 innings of relief while freshman Eric Stolzenburg retired the only batter he faced.

Canisius and Miami complete their two-game, mid-week series on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.

Notes: Canisius and Miami met for the second time, with the only other meeting coming on March 30, 1990, with the RedHawks winning 12-0... Foster and sophomore Jimmy Luppens each extended his hitting streak to five games while junior Chris Gruarin pushed his to six games... Kelso had a career-high three hits on the day... Senior Drew Pettit had two hits, his sixth multi-hit game in the last nine games... Pierce has 16 strikeouts in 17 innings... Canisius had three straight strikeouts to end the eighth inning after the first two batters reached. The Griffs only had one strikeout the rest of the game... Prior to Tuesday's game, the Griffs had only grounded into two double plays in the previous nine games combined.
