The
Canisius College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Duke
University on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 10-1 and 4-3 and are
now 3-3 on the season.
Game 2- Duke 4, Canisius 3
Duke
scored once in the first and twice in the third to hold an early 3-0 lead. The
Griffs got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as junior Chris Gruarin led off with a double and
moved to third on a single from sophomore Shane
Zimmer. Sophomore Jose Torralba
dropped down a bunt but Gruarin was forced out at the plate. Sophomore Ryan Coppinger followed with an RBI
single to score Zimmer. However freshman Mike
Booth grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Canisius
came right back in the top of the fifth, scoring twice to knot the score at
3-3. Sophomore Ronnie Bernick led
off with a double, and junior Christian
Segar reached on a Duke fielding error, putting runners at the corners.
Freshman Connor Panas scored Bernick
with a sacrifice fly and pinch runner Mike
Krische moved up on another Duke error. Krische would score on a two-out,
RBI single from Gruarin to tie the score at 3-3.
Duke
scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Matt
Berezo drew a one-out walk off Canisius starter Devon Stewart. Berezo stole second and scored on an RBI single from
Grant McCabe to chase Stewart. Freshman Eric Stolzenburg
came into the game and ended the Duke rally.
Canisius
wouldn't go away quietly, producing an opportunity to tie the game in the
eighth and ninth innings. Pinch hitter Jesse
Kelso drew a one-out walk in the eighth, but Booth hit into his second
double play of the day to end the inning. In the ninth, Canisius mounted a
two-out rally as Panas drew a walk and a single from senior Drew Pettit put runners at the corners.
David Putman came into the game and struck out Gruarin on three pitches to end
the game.
Stewart
(0-1) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing four runs, three earned, in 6.1
innings while striking out three. Stolzenburg and junior Scott Whitehead combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Game 1 - Duke 10, Canisius 1
Duke
(4-4) took control of the game by scoring twice in the third, once in the
fourth and three in the fifth inning when the Blue Devils chased Canisius
starting pitcher Garrett Cortright.
Duke forced Cortright (1-1) into throwing 102 pitches in his 4.1 innings of
work as the sophomore walked five, hit three batters and struck out four while
allowing all six runs. Jordan Betts led off the bottom of the fifth with a
single and Mike Rosenfeld was hit by a pitch. After Andy Perez flew out, a
one-out walk to Angelo LaBruna loaded the bases. LaBruna was retired on a
fielder's choice at second, but a throwing error allowed Rosenfeld to score the
second run on the play. Redshirt senior
Tim Seil relieved Cortright and Berezo had an RBI triple to score Anthony
D'Alessandro and make it 6-0.
Pettit reached on a one-out
single in the sixth, moved to second on a walk to Gruarin and scored on an RBI
single from Zimmer. However, Duke starter Trent Swart got junior Brooklyn Foster to hit into a double play to end the inning. The
Griffs also hit into a double play to end the top of the seventh inning.
Canisius
and Duke conclude the four-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set for
noon.
Notes: Redshirt
sophomore Charlie LoBosco recorded
two outs in the bottom of the eighth in the opener, his first appearance since Feb.
20, 2010, against Illinois-Chicago... Gruarin didn't record a hit in the first
game of Saturday's doubleheader. He has a hit in five of six games this year,
leading the team with four multi-hit games, and has reached base in all six
games... Zimmer has also reached base in all six games this season and drew three
walks in the opener. The sophomore has seven walks in six games and has a .538
on-base percentage.
