The
Canisius College baseball team used a two-RBI single from junior Christian Segar in the top of the 10th
inning to defeat Duke University 5-4 in Durham, N.C. on Friday night. The
Golden Griffins improve to 3-1 on the season.
Trailing
3-2 in the top of the ninth, junior Chris
Gruarin reached on a one-out single and advanced to third on an errant
throw on a pickoff attempt. Junior Brooklyn
Foster came through with the two-out, RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Sophomore
Jose Torralba led off the top of the
10th with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
sophomore Jesse Kelso. Torralba would
steal third and a walk to junior Manny
Hernandez put runners at the corners. Hernandez then stole second to put
two runners in scoring position. Segar followed with one-out, two-RBI single up
the middle to give the Griffs a 5-3 lead.
Redshirt
junior Nathan Linseman (1-0) got the
first two outs in the bottom of the 10th before sophomore Jon Fitzsimmons came into the game.
Duke scored one run and got runners to second and third with two outs, but
Fitzsimmons got a strikeout to end the game and record his second save of the
season.
Segar
went 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI and two stolen bases. Gruarin was 2-for-4
with two runs scored while Kelso went 2-for-3.
Redshirt
junior Billy Martin went eight
innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits on 109 pitches. Preseason All-American
Marcus Stroman started for Duke and went seven innings, allowing two runs and
striking out 10.
Canisius
and Duke continue the four-game series on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins
play a doubleheader with the Blue Devils. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
defeated a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference for the second consecutive
season as the Golden Griffins defeated Maryland last season in College Park,
Md... Gruarin has at least two hits in three of the team's four games this
season... Canisius had five steals in the game, giving them 14 stolen bases
through four games this season... The extra-inning game was the first for the
Griffs since May 7, 2011, an 8-7 win at Siena. Canisius has won three of its
last four extra-inning games.
