Canisius College head men's basketball coach Jim Baron announced today that seniors Alshwan Hymes, Isaac Sosa and Harold Washington and juniors Billy Baron and Chris Manhertz have been named team captains for the 2012-13 season.

"Since I arrived here in April, these guys have shown me the leadership qualities necessary to get this program moving in the right direction," Baron said. "Now that we're into the official preseason, it is time for this group to step up and lead us through the next steps of this journey."

Hymes enters his senior season ranked third in program history with 175 career 3-point field goals made. A three-year letterwinner for the Griffs, he ranked second on the team and seventh in the MAAC last season with his 15.4 points per game, and he led the MAAC in 2011-12 with 2.8 3-pointers made per contest. A native of DeWitt, N.Y., Hymes has played in more career games (84) than any other current Canisius player.

Sosa joins the Blue and Gold's active roster in 2012-13 after sitting out last season after transferring from Central Florida, in accordance with NCAA rules. At Central Florida, he played in 96 career games and made 37 starts for the Golden Knights, and he left that program ranked fourth all-time in school history with 190 career makes from behind the 3-point arc. A three-time Conference USA All-Academic Team honoree, he ranked among the top-six in 3-point field goal percentage in Conference USA in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

Washington is in his second year on the Canisius roster after playing his first two collegiate seasons at Cecil College in Maryland. A second-team All-MAAC performer a season ago, Washington averaged 17.0 points per game for the Blue and Gold last year and became the first Canisius player since 1977-78 to score 500 or more points in his first season as a Griff. He played in all 30 games last season and scored in double figures a team-high 26 times, highlighted by his career-high effort of 30 points in the team's 87-83 victory at Longwood.

Baron joins the Canisius roster this season after playing 20 games at Rhode Island in 2011-12. He averaged 13.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game for the Rams last year, and he shot 40.4 percent from the field and 31.2 percent from 3-point land. Prior to joining the Rhode Island program, Baron attended the University of Virginia. In high school, he averaged 27.5 points and 6.2 assists per game at Worcester Academy during the 2009-10 campaign.

Manhertz is entering his second season as a team captain. Last year, he averaged 7.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, and he closed out his sophomore season ranked fifth in the MAAC in rebounding average. He scored a career-high 16 points at James Madison in the 2011-12 season opener and closed out last year with a team-high four double-doubles after he recorded 10-or more rebounds in nine different contests.
