QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius College women's basketball team returns home for two games in the Koessler Athletic Center this weekend, starting with Friday's game against Loyola University.
  • Both games this weekend will be part of doubleheaders with the Golden Griffin men's basketball team.
  • Canisius leads the all-time series 26-25. Canisius and Loyola met in the quarters of the 2011 MAAC Championship, with the Greyhounds winning 68-53 in overtime.
  • Friday's game is the first of two meetings between the teams in seven days, as they will play in Baltimore on Thursday, Feb. 2.
  • At the start of the week, Canisius leads the MAAC in free-throw percentage (79.1) and ranks fifth nationally.
  • Junior Ashley Durham ranks ninth in the country in free-throw percentage at 89.5 percent.  Durham leads the team with a 14.4 scoring average through eight conference games. 
  • Through Wednesday night's games, the Griffs are sixth in the country with an assist on 68 percent of their field goals. 
  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle leads the team in scoring and rebounding. The Burlington, Ontario native is shooting 53.6 percent on two-point shots in the last 11 games.
  • Friday's game is a part of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight - a nationwide effort to capitalize on basketball games between Jesuit schools and, through those games, bring greater positive awareness and exposure to Jesuit education and its shared mission.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year, leads Canisius in scoring (11.3) and rebounding (5.1). She has scored in double figures in nine of the last 13 games and ranks 10th in the conference in field goal percentage (41.8).
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, has made 38 3-point field goals this season, accounting for 71.6 percent of her made field goals. Morabito has made three or more 3-pointers in eight games and has scored in double figures 10 times.
  • Junior Ashley Durham has 52 assists in the last 11 contests and is third in the MAAC in assists per game (4.1). Durham also ranks first in the conference in free-throw percentage (89.5) and has made 74 of her last 80 free throws.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli has 30 3-pointers in the last 14 games. Through eight MAAC games, Hoohuli is shooting 47.5 percent on 3-pointers, which is third in the conference. Hoohuli has drawn a team-high seven charges on the season and is averaging 10.1 points in the last 11 games.
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season,  is out indefinitely with a leg injury and is shooting 50.7 percent from the field in her last 14 appearances. Braun has at least five rebounds in eight games and has at least one steal in 14 of her last 16 appearances.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp set a season-high with 11 rebounds in Sunday's game at Iona.  She had a career-high with five blocks against Cornell on Dec. 28. VandeBovenkamp has made her last 14 free throws.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes has at least five rebounds in nine games this season and has recorded at least one steal in 12 games. Wilkes leads the team with a 50.5 field goal percentage, including a 59.5 field goal percentage at home.
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox has scored six or more points in six games this season. The 6-foot-3 forward has a block in 25 career games.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner is averaging 8.6 rebounds per 40 minutes and has made 13 of her last 17 free throws.  
  • Freshman Brooke Angelos is averaging 5.0 assists per 40 minutes.

LOYOLA SCOUT

  • Loyola comes to Western New York with a 7-12 record and 3-5 record in the MAAC. The Greyhounds have won two of their last three.
  • Loyola has a 3-8 road record this season, including a 2-2 record away from home in MAAC play, including a 59-45 win at Manhattan on Sunday.
  • Senior Miriam McKenzie, who missed three games due to injury, leads the team with a 15.2 points per game average and 8.2 rebounds per game, both third in the MAAC. McKenzie earned numerous awards last week after recording double-doubles in both of Loyola's games.
  • Junior Katie Sheahin averages 14.4 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game while leading the MAAC with 65 steals. 
  • In MAAC play, Loyola is averaging 56.9 points per game while allowing 58.4 points per game. The Greyhounds are shooting 38.7 percent from the floor and allowing 38.9 percent in conference play. The Greyhounds are sixth in turnover margin (-0.1), fourth in defensive rebounding percentage (68.0) and 10th in offensive rebounding percentage (27.6)
  • Joe Logan is in his seventh season at Loyola and has a 103-100 career record. Logan led the team to a 15-3 record in the MAAC last season, and won a WNIT game at Old Dominion.

SERIES HISTORY VS. LOYOLA

  • Canisius leads the all-time series 26-25. The Greyhounds have won four straight in the series.
  • The teams met three times last season, including in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Championship. Loyola won 68-53 in overtime after Miriam McKenzie hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime.
  • Fifteen of the last 18 meetings between the teams have been decided by single digits or gone to overtime, with seven of those 15 games being decided by five points or fewer. Canisius is 8-7 in those 15 games.
  • Canisius has lost two straight to Loyola in the KAC but has won four of the last six between the teams in Buffalo.
