Canisius College junior Drew Pettit (Fonthill, Ontario) and senior Sean Jamieson (Simcoe, Ontario) were
named to the Capital One Academic All-America®
Baseball Teams on Tuesday. The teams are selected by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Canisius was the only school at the
University level to have two players selected to the Capital One Academic
All-America® Baseball Teams in 2011. The Golden
Griffin baseball team has an Academic All-American® for the second consecutive season (Ian Choy in 2010) with
Pettit and Jamieson ranking as the sixth and seventh in program history. It is
the first time in school history, in any sport, that Canisius has had two
Academic All-Americans® from the same team
in the same year. Pettit and Jamieson were two of three players selected from
the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Ricky Pacione from Marist).
Pettit led the MAAC in conference play
with a .423 batting average. The economics major ranks fifth in the MAAC with
66 hits on the season. Entering the postseason, Pettit is hitting .344 with 32
runs scored, 11 doubles, six home runs and 38 RBI. The Griffs' starting third
baseman has committed three errors in the last 34 games, recording a .974
fielding percentage during that stretch. Pettit is hitting .423 with runners in
scoring position.
Jamieson leads Canisius in most offensive
categories as the team's starting shortstop is hitting .358 with 67 hits, 13
home runs, 49 RBI, a .658 slugging percentage, .474 on-base percentage and 22
stolen bases. Jamieson was a two-time MAAC Player of the Week and was named a
Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on March 28. The biology major was
one of 25 shortstops named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List.
The No. 4 seed Canisius College Golden
Griffins open play in the MAAC Championship against No. 1 seed Manhattan on
Thursday, with first pitch at Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. set for 3 p.m.
