Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Saint Peter’s

Junior JC Spinosa went a combined 4-for-7 with four RBI to lead Canisius in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 9-15 overall and evened their MAAC record at 6-6 as they finished off the series sweep of the Peacocks, who fell to 3-25 and 0-12 in conference play.

GAME ONE RECAP
Junior pitcher Joe LoPinto was credited with the win for Canisius, improving to 3-3 on the season after tossing six innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven. James Ellis took the loss for Saint Peter's after pitching a season-long seven innings, allowing four runs and striking out four.

The Griffs took a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first as senior Owen Silliman got the inning started by launching the first pitch he saw to deep center for a solo home run. Spinosa and redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki added RBI doubles later in the frame to stake Canisius to the early advantage.

Saint Peter's got on the board in the second as Aidan Forrest launched a solo shot of his own to cut the Griffs' lead to 3-1.

The teams exchanged single runs in the fourth as Chase Fogg hit an RBI double to right in the top half of the inning to make it a one-run game, only to see freshman Blake Herman answer back in the bottom half of the frame when he hit his first collegiate blast to left, making it a 4-2 ballgame.

The Peackocks made it a one-run game in the seventh as RJ Azarieh singled to center, but Canisius put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth as Spinosa hit a solo homer to left, followed by a two-run double from senior Mason Cisco to close out the 7-3 win.

Senior Sam Staerker earned his team-leading third save of the season, pitching three innings and allowing one run while striking out four.

GAME TWO RECAP
Freshman Mark Rogers got the nod on the bump in the series finale, collecting the win after six innings of work, allowing just one run and striking out six. Marcus Monroe was credited with the loss, registering six innings and allowing two runs.

Cisco continued his hot finish in the opener to the nightcap, opening the scoring in the second with a solo homer to right that gave the Griffs the early lead.

The Peacocks knotted things up at 1-1 in the sixth when Joey Dwyer recorded a two-out double to left to score Steve Polizzi.

The Griffs retook the lead in the bottom of the frame as redshirt junior Ronan Glassford hit an RBI single to put the Golden Griffins back in front, 2-1.

Canisius loaded the bases once again in the seventh before Zwirecki worked a bases-loaded walk. Cisco recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice later in the inning, followed by a bases-clearing triple from Spinosa that put the Griffs up 6-1.

Saint Peter's went on to add two runs in the final two frames, scoring on a wild pitch in the eighth followed by an RBI single from Polizzi in the ninth, but that as as close as the Peacocks would get as Canisius posted a 6-3 victory to close out the sweep.
