Baseball Shuts Out Saint Peter’s in Series Opener

Senior Felix Morin allowed just two hits over seven innings while the Canisius offense erupted for 17 hits in an 11-0 win over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
With Friday's win, Canisius improved to 7-15 overall with a 4-6 mark in the MAAC. Saint Peter's moved to 3-23 and 0-10 in conference play with the setback.
 
Every Canisius starter recorded a hit in the win, highlighted by another strong performance from redshirt sophomore Tyson Kaufman, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki added four RBI in the contest as Morin was credited with the win, improving to 2-4 on the bump as he posted six strikeouts in his .
 
The Peacocks only recorded two hits in the loss while Kurt Thomas fell to 0-6 on the season after going 5.1 innings, allowing 14 hits and seven runs.
 
Canisius struck first in the bottom of the first as redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki plated the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to center that gave the Griffs an early lead.
 
In the fourth, the Griffs would strike again as junior JC Spinosa hit an RBI triple to left, plating redshirt junior Ronan Glassford and giving Canisius a two-run lead.
 
Zwirecki added to his RBI total in the fifth as his single up the middle scored two runs and stretched the Griffs advantage to four.
 
Kaufman extended the Golden Griffins' lead in the sixth as his single to left plated one, followed by an RBI single from senior Mason Cisco that made it a 7-0 ballgame.
 
Zwirecki added his fourth RBI in the seventh as the catcher worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Griffs up eight.
 
Canisius would go on to plate three more runs in the eighth courtesy of a pair of sacrifice flies from freshman Grady Brown and Kufman. Senior Tommy Sheridan added an RBI single to close out the scoring in the shutout win.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius now leads Saint Peter's by a 54-23 margin in the all-time series with Thursday's win.
• Zwirecki contributed on both sides of the ball for the Griffs as he went 1-for-2 with four RBI at the plate while also throwing out two runners out stealing in the win.
• Morin did not allow a base runner through the first three innings and faced the minimum batters through the game's first six innings en route to the win.
• Cisco added two RBI on Thursday to increase his season total to 12, with six of those coming over his last three appearances.
• Kaufman has found his swing at the plate for Canisius, going a combined 9-for-15 with four RBI and five runs scored over his last three games.
• Freshman Jackson Long tossed the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out two.
• The Griffs swiped four bags in the win while the Peacocks were caught stealing on their two attempts.

Canisius concludes its MAAC series against Saint Peter's with a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
