Behind
a strong starting pitching performance from redshirt sophomore Billy Martin and a six-run fifth inning,
the Canisius College baseball team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 9-1
win at George Washington University at Saturday. The Golden Griffins improve to
13-16 overall.
Senior
Brian Burton led the Griffs with
three hits to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Chris Gruarin and freshman Ryan Coppinger each had two-hit days. Senior
Sean Jamieson led the Griffs with
three RBI while Gruarin and junior Drew
Pettit each had two RBI.
Canisius
broke open the game with a six-run top of the fifth, taking advantage of a
George Washington (9-22) error to score five unearned runs. Senior Nat Barone reached on the error with
one out in the inning and moved to third on a single from Coppinger Freshman Shane Zimmer extended the inning with a
two-out walk to load the bases. Jamieson followed with a bases-clearing double
to put Canisius up 3-0. Burton scored Jamieson with an RBI single, and Pettit
closed out the scoring with a two-run homer to right.
The
Griffs added a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Gruarin. Canisius posted
two more runs in the ninth with an RBI triple from Gruarin and RBI groundout
from senior Andrew Russo.
Martin
went the distance for his third complete game of the season, allowing just one
run, which came in the eighth. Martin yielded five hits, walked four and struck
out five to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Canisius
and George Washington will play a doubleheader on Sunday, with first pitch set
for 11 a.m. The weekend's schedule changed due to rain in the mid-Atlantic as
they originally were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday.
