Canisius College sophomore Michael Carrig shot an
even-par 72 and is all alone in second place after the first 18 holes at the
2011 MAAC Golf Championships at the Disney Magnolia Course in Lake Buena Vista,
Fla. Carrig's 72 stands as the lowest round in his collegiate career.
As a team, the Golden Griffins are
in fourth place in the nine-team field after the Blue and Gold recorded a team
score of 309. Canisius is five shots back of third-place Iona, which shot a 304
on the day. Loyola leads the team portion of the tournament after the Greyhounds,
who are the defending MAAC champions, shot 297, highlighted by Alex Redfearn's opening
round 71. Redfearn's one-under par score on the par-72, 7,073-yard track has
him in the clubhouse as the first round leader in the individual competition.
Carrig went out in 35 and posted a
37 on the back nine in his second career MAAC Championship start. Senior Michael Knott and
freshman Jonathan Clark are currently tied for 16th in the field after both
players shot 78. Sophomore Mike Spiotta is tied for 31st after he carded an 81, while
fellow sophomore Joe Vogl is tied for 37th with his first round tally of 83.
The Griffs are three strokes ahead
of fifth-place Manhattan after round one and six strokes better than Fairfield,
which sits in sixth place after finishing with a team score of 315. Canisius
will be paired with golfers from Manhattan and Fairfield on Saturday as
the second round starts at 8:20 a.m.
