Golf Closes Out Trip to Penn State

The Canisius College golf team wrapped up its weekend at the 35th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate event at Penn State's Blue Course in State College, Pa. The Golden Griffins posted a final-round team score of 312, and the Blue and Gold finished the 54-hole event tied for 14th overall.

Sophomore Mike Spiotta shot a final round score of 75 on Sunday and finished the event tied for 61st with a three-day total of 237. Senior Michael Knott fired a 76 in the third round and posted a 54-hole score of 234, which tied him for 49th.

Penn State won the team championship for the 22nd time in the 35-year history of the event with a team score of 880, seven strokes better than Towson. William and Mary placed third with a team score of 896, followed by Army (897) and Delaware (905) to round out the top five.

Penn State's T.J. Howe won the individual title with a combined score of 216 after he shot rounds of 70, 73 and 73. Howe's score was one stroke better than Binghamton's Jake Katz, who posted a score of 217 after fired a one-over 72 on Sunday.

The Canisius golf team will return to action April 15-16 at the Detroit Titan Invite at Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland, Mich.
