Thompson Paces Golf in Opening Round of Carpetbagger Classic

Led by a two-over par 74 from freshman Cole Thompson, the Canisius golf team opened the spring portion of its 2026 schedule Saturday with the first round of The Carpetbagger Classic at Worthington Manor Country Club in Urbana, Md.

Thompson finds himself in a tie for 18th place after his season-low round that saw him post a one-over par 37 on both nines. Junior Jake Dantonio (79), freshman Blake Furtney (80), junior Mikey Takacs (84) and freshman Adam Cichowski (84) rounded out the Golden Griffins entry. Taking part in the event as an individual, Alex Schickling posted an opening-round result of 79.

On the team leaderboard, the Golden Griffins sit in 14th place after the posting a team total of 317 in the opening round. Host Mount St. Mary's holds a three-stroke lead over Monmouth in second after beginning the tournament with a two-over-par total of 290. Monmouth (292) holds a two-stroke lead over third-place Colgate (294).

The Mount's Force Kosalutta sits atop the individual leaderboard after carding a three-under-par 69 on Saturday. The Mount's Santiago Bonequi, Wagner's Guillermo Ochoa Valencia, Jackson Roman of Loyola Maryland (IND), and Mitchell Grey of Howard makeup a four-way tie for second with a score of two-under-par 70.

The Griffs close out The Carpetbagger Classic Sunday with second round competition getting underway with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
