Getting
two complete-game performances on the mound and scoring in 10 of the final 16
innings of the day, the Canisius College baseball team started conference play
with a doubleheader sweep at Iona College on Saturday. The Golden Griffins won
13-4 and 9-0 to improve to 8-14 overall and start 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference for the third time in the last four seasons.
Senior
Sean Jamieson reached base in six of
his nine plate appearances, hitting two home runs and scoring five runs.
Freshman Jose Torralba went
5-for-10 with two doubles, while junior Drew Pettit went 4-for-8 with a homer and four RBI.
Redshirt
sophomore Billy Martin (2-1) started the opener, allowed
four runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out five in his second complete
game of the season. Redshirt senior Shane
Davis (3-2) threw his fourth career shutout and 18th career
complete game. Davis matched a career high with nine strikeouts as he allowed
seven hits and two walk in his seven innings.
In
the opener, Iona scored twice in the bottom of the second before the Griffs
scored 13 of the final 15 runs in the game. The Griffs got an RBI single from
freshman Shane Zimmer in the fourth
and freshman Ryan Coppinger scored
on a passed ball in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
Canisius
took control of the game with a five-run sixth inning, with the rally starting
as sophomore Chris Gruarin reached
on a passed ball after striking out. Zimmer singled to put runners at the
corners while an RBI single from Torralba gave Canisius the lead. Freshman Ralph Alloco reached on an
error to load the bases, and Zimmer would score on a passed ball to give Canisius a
4-2 lead. After Coppinger reached on a fielder's choice, with Torralba getting
thrown out at home, the Griffs took advantage of the extra outs as Jamieson hit
a three-run homer to left to put Canisius up 7-2.
Iona
(7-12, 0-2 MAAC) scored single runs in the seventh and eighth as Canisius also
added a run in the eighth. The Griffs broke the game open with a five-run ninth
inning. Jamieson walked to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI double from
senior Brian Burton. Pettit followed
with a two-run homer to put Canisius up 11-4. Canisius would get an RBI single
from senior Nat Barone and an RBI
groundout from freshman Jimmy Luppens
to close out the scoring.
In
the second game, Canisius jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead as the Griffs scored
two runs in each of the first two innings. Torralba led off with a single and
Jamieson walked to put runners on first and second. Burton laid down a bunt
single to load the bases. After Torralba was forced at home on a grounder from
Pettit, Jamieson would score on a wild pitch and Zimmer had a sacrifice fly to
put Canisius up 2-0. The Griffs had a two-out rally in the second as Torralba
doubled, Jamieson singled and Burton walked to load the bases. Pettit doubled
to left to drive in two runs and put Canisius up four.
Jamieson
hit his second homer of the day in the fourth. Pettit led off the fifth with a
single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on an RBI
groundout from Luppens. Sophomore Frank
Polino followed with his first career homer to put Canisius ahead 7-0.
Those
seven runs would be more than enough run support for Davis. The redshirt senior
allowed the leadoff hitter to reach in two innings, with his only two walks of the game coming to the first
two batters of the game. Davis didn't allow a runner to get past second base
and retired eight of the last nine batters he faced.
Canisius
and Iona wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set for
noon.
Notes:
Canisius clinches the series win and has won 25 of its last 30 conference

27, 2010, against Iona... Alloco batted in the leadoff spot in the opener and

out indefinitely after suffering an injury in Wednesday's game at Kentucky...

in the No. 2 spot in the second game, not batting third for the first time this
season... Burton hit third for the first time in his career (170 games) while Pettit
hit cleanup for the first time in his career as well... Burton has now reached
base in all 21 games he's played in this season... Gruarin and Jamieson each have
a five-game hitting streak... Martin has allowed nine runs in 24 innings pitched (3.38
ERA) in his three starts, going at least seven innings in each start... Pettit
