The
University of Dayton took advantage of six Canisius errors in the opener and
used a seven-run fifth inning in the nightcap to score 21 runs in Saturday's
doubleheader, sweeping the Canisius College baseball team 14-11 and 7-4 at Time
Warner Cable Stadium. The Golden Griffins fall to 4-8 on the season.
Senior
Brian Burton led the Griffs with
five hits and five RBI on the day while junior Drew Pettit, senior Sean
Jamieson and freshman Ryan Coppinger
had four hits apiece. Pettit and Jamieson each had four RBI while Pettit,
Burton and Jamieson each hit a home run - the first homers of the season for
the Griffs.
In
the first game, Canisius got on the board in the top of the first as senior Will Chomicki led off with a triple and
scored on a sacrifice fly from Jamieson. Dayton then scored four runs in the
bottom of the first, taking advantage of two Canisius errors to take a 4-1 lead.
The
Griffs came back with a run in the top of the second as freshman Jose Torralba led off with a double and
would eventually score on an RBI groundout from senior Andrew Russo. After Dayton added a run in the bottom of the second,
the Griffs made it a one-run game in the fourth as Burton led off with a homer
to right. Freshman Shane Zimmer drew
a four-pitch walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Torralba and scored
on an RBI single from Pettit. The Griffs would tie the game in the fifth as Coppinger
reached on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Burton to
make the score 5-5.
The
Flyers then scored nine straight runs in the next four innings, taking
advantage of four Canisius errors in that span to go up 14-5. The Griffs would
rally in the ninth, scoring six runs as Burton had a two-RBI single and Petit
had a three-run homer, but the rally wasn't enough as the Flyers ended the
scoring after Pettit's homer.
Redshirt
senior Shane Davis (1-2) allowed 14 hits and 11 runs, seven
earned, in six innings of work to take the loss. Redshirt junior Tim Seil pitched the final two innings,
allowing three unearned runs.
In
the second game, Canisius built a 4-0 lead as the Griffs scored two runs in the
first and two more runs in the fifth. Chomicki, Coppinger and Jamieson led off
the game with singles with Jamieson bringing home Chomicki. Zimmer would score
Jamieson later in the inning to give Canisius the early 2-0 advantage. The
Griffs doubled their lead in the fifth on a two-run homer from Jamieson.
Dayton
broke out for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, to take a three-run
lead. The big hits for the Flyers came on a three-run home run from Zach
Stewart and a two-run homer from Jonathan Castine as they took a 7-6 lead.
Canisius
rallied in the ninth for the second straight game, but couldn't come all the way back. After Chomicki reached on a
fielder's choice, Coppinger singled to put runners on the corners. The duo
would advance 90 feet on a passed ball, scoring Chomicki and making the score
7-5. Burton's two-out, RBI single scored Coppinger to make it a one-run game, but
Zimmer flied out to center to end the game.
Freshman
Garrett Cortright (1-3) took the
loss as Cortright allowed all seven runs in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Josh Marshall threw 3.2 innings of
scoreless relief.
Canisius
concludes the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday, with two games at Wright
State. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
