Steven
Gruver threw seven shutout innings, striking out 10 to lead Tennessee to a 4-0
win over the Canisius College baseball team on Friday afternoon, at Lindsay
Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The Golden Griffins fall to 3-2 on the
season.
The
Volunteers got on the board in the second inning when Matt Duffy led off with a
double. A fly out to right moved Duffy to third and an RBI groundout from Tyler
Horne gave Tennessee the 1-0 lead.
Canisius
came right back in the top of the third inning as sophomore Chris Gruarin was hit by a pitch. A
one-out single by freshman Ryan
Coppinger put Canisius runners at the corners, but Gruver picked off
Coppinger for the second out of the inning and got senior Will Chomicki to pop out to end the threat.
Tennessee
(3-1) looked to add to its lead in the fifth as a double from Zach Osborne put
runners at second and third with one out. Andrew Toles flew out to Chomicki in
left, and Chomicki would throw out Chris Pierce at the plate to keep it a 1-0
game.
Tennessee
added two insurance runs in the seventh off Canisius starter Shane Davis and another run in the
eighth off Canisius reliever Billy
Martin. Davis (0-1) went seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits,
walked one and struck out one.
Gruver
allowed two hits and struck out 10 in seven innings to pick up the win. Levi
Dean threw two scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Canisius
and Tennessee play the middle game of the series on Saturday, with first pitch
scheduled for 2 p.m.
