No. 12 Colgate Tops Canisius Hockey

Hamilton, N.Y. - In a contest that featured six special teams goals, the Canisius College hockey team lost to nationally-ranked Colgate on Friday night, 5-2. The Griffs drop to 4-11-3 on the season, while the 12th-ranked Raiders improve to 12-4-2.

"We played pretty good and showed a lot of effort in 5-on-5 play tonight," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "Their top-end players on their power play made the difference tonight."

Sophomores Taylor Law and Kyle Gibbons both scored power-play goals for the Griffs.

Sophomore goaltender Tony Capobianco recorded 30 saves to lead the Canisius defense.

The Raiders opened the contest with two power-play goals to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Robbie Bourdon scored 8:59 into the game and then added a second extra-man tally with 1:23 remaining in the opening frame.

The Griffs answered back with two power-play goals of their own early in the second stanza. With a two-man advantage, sophomore Ben Danford one-timed a shot toward goal and Law tipped the puck into the back of the net to bring Canisius within one, 2-1. Junior Preston Shupe also registered an assist on Law's sixth goal of the season 1:50 into the period.

Canisius quickly found its second score of the night when Gibbons netted his team-leading seventh tally of the season just 21 seconds later. The sophomore knocked in his own rebound to knot the game at two. Law and Shupe both posted an assist on the power-play goal.

Colgate reclaimed its two-goal lead with two more special teams tallies before the second intermission. Corbin McPherson ripped a shot into the back of the net on the power play with 7:12 remaining in the second before Austin Mayer scored a short-handed goal with 2:16 left in the frame.

The Raiders scored the only goal of the third period when Austin Smith scored one second after a Colgate power play expired, sealing the 5-2 victory.

Colgate finished the contest with a 35-24 advantage in shots on the night, while going 3-for-7 with the extra-man advantage. Canisius converted two of its four extra-man chances.

Eric Mihalik recorded 22 saves to earn the victory in goal for the Raiders.

The Griffs return to Atlantic Hockey play next weekend with a pair of games at Army. The schools begin the series in West Point on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
