Hockey Defeats Bentley, 3-1

The Canisius College hockey team earned a 3-1 victory against visiting Bentley on Sunday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. With the win, the Griffs improve to 2-3-1 on the season and 2-1-1 against Atlantic Hockey foes, while the Falcons drop to 2-6-1 and 2-1-0 in league play.

"I think we played very similar to last night but with an element of poise and passion," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "I'm proud of the way that we responded to a tough home loss. We got better this week again and that is going to be the story of our season with such a young squad - how much we improve from week-to-week."

Junior Preston Shupe, sophomore Taylor Law and freshman Mitch McCrank all scored in the win.

Sophomore Tony Capobianco led Canisius' effort on defense, recording 35 saves to earn his first win of the season.

For the first time this year, Canisius was the first team to score in a game when Shupe netted his second power-play goal of the campaign 9:54 into the contest. Sophomore Ben Danford fired a shot from the blue line and Shupe tipped the puck into the back of the net from the slot. Sophomore Kyle Gibbons also recorded an assist to help give Canisius a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Griffs until the third period when Canisius netted a pair of goals 72 seconds apart. McCrank gave the Griffs a two-goal advantage with his first collegiate tally 4:25 into the third frame. After junior Torrey Lindsay had his shot saved, freshman Doug Beck knocked the rebound to McCrank. The freshman then scored from right outside the goal crease for the 2-0 score.

Law then stretched Canisius' lead to three with his first score of the season just 72 seconds later. Senior Scott Moser forced a Bentley turnover in its zone and freshman Carl Larsson gathered the loose puck. Larsson then found Law streaking through the slot and the sophomore made a move to beat the Bentley goaltender and finished for the 3-0 advantage.

Bentley finally got on the scoreboard with 10:34 remaining in regulation when Brett Gensler scored. The Canisius defense, however, would not allow the Falcons to get any closer as the Griffs and Capobianco sealed the victory.

The Falcons outshot Canisius on the afternoon, 36-32. The Griffs killed all seven Bentley power plays and went 1-for-2 on their own extra-man opportunities. Branden Komm recorded 29 saves in net for Bentley in the defeat.

Canisius takes a break from Atlantic Hockey action for a pair of non-conference games next weekend at Bowling Green. The schools begin the two-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Capobianco has recorded at least 35 saves in each of his three appearances this season ... The sophomore currently ranks sixth nationally and first in Atlantic Hockey with a .938 save percentage ... Canisius has successfully killed its opponents' last 19 power-play chances after surrendering a goal on six of the first 12 attempts of the season ... Larsson recorded his first collegiate point with the assist on Law's goal ... The schools have split each of the last four series with Bentley winning the opener and Canisius winning the finale.
