The Canisius College hockey team couldn't break through in a 2-0 defeat to Bentley on Saturday night. The Griffs, who went 0-for-8 on the power play in the contest, suffered their first Atlantic Hockey loss of the season and are now 1-1-1 in league play and 1-3-1 overall. The Falcons improve to 2-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 against conference foes.
"The difference in a low-scoring game like the one we had tonight was our inability to score on the power play," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "The responsibility to turn the unit around starts with me. I need to work with the team and figure a way to help us improve in this area."
Senior Dan Morrison played strong in net for the Griffs, stopping 28-of-29 shots that he faced.
After a scoreless first period, the Falcons netted all the scoring they would need 12:40 into the second frame. In a 4-on-4 situation, Bentley won a face-off back to the point. Zach Marginsky fired a high shot toward goal and the puck deflected off of Brett Hartung's glove and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Canisius was unable to find the equalizer during the remainder of the game. The Griffs had a number of chances to pull even, including a Kyle Gibbons shot that rang off the crossbar. Canisius also had three power-play opportunities in the final period, including two in the final six minutes of regulation, but couldn't convert.
The Falcons eventually sealed the contest with 45 ticks remaining when Hartung netted his second goal of the game with an empty net.
Bentley held a 30-24 advantage in shots on the night, while going 0-for-2 with the extra-man advantage. Branden Komm stopped all 24 shots for the Falcons to earn the shutout victory.
The teams wrap up the two-game series tomorrow afternoon with game time slated for 2:05 p.m. at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
