After leading the Canisius College hockey team to a weekend
sweep, netminders Tony Capobianco
and Dan
Morrison shared Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week
accolades, announced by the league on Monday. The two standouts combined to
stop 77-of-79 shots in two victories at AIC during the weekend.
Capobianco opened the Griffs' series at AIC with 39 saves in
a 2-1 win before Morrison followed with 38 saves in another 2-1 victory,
helping Canisius to its first series sweep of the 2011-12 campaign.
The two goaltenders have helped Canisius to its second-best
start in conference history, backstopping the team to a 4-1-2 Atlantic Hockey
record. The Griffs own a 1.40 goals against average during league play and not
including empty-net tallies, Canisius has allowed more than one goal on only
one occasion this season - a 3-3 draw at Air Force.
Capobianco - a sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario - earned
his first career Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week accolade after receiving
the league's Rookie of the Week honor once last season. With his 39-save
performance, Capobianco now leads all netminders in the league and ranks fifth
in the country with his .942 save percentage to go along with a 2.29 goals
against average.
Morrison - a senior from London, Ontario - picked up the
weekly accolade for the sixth time in his career and the second time this
season. With his 38 saves against the Yellow Jackets, Morrison became just the
second player in school history to reach the 2,500-save plateau. He now has
2,513 career stops and is just 258 saves shy of Bryan Worosz's program record
of 2,771.
Morrison currently leads all Atlantic Hockey goaltenders
with a 0.99 goals against average and .970 save percentage during league games
this season. The senior has been at his best late in games, posting a 0.44
goals against average and .985 save percentage during the third period,
including stopping all 16 shots in the third frame of Sunday's one-goal
victory.
Overall, Morrison is on pace for career bests with a 2.56
goals against average and .920 save percentage during his senior campaign.
Capobianco, Morrison and the Griffs continue Atlantic Hockey
play this weekend with a pair of games at Holy Cross. Canisius and the
Crusaders begin the series on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
