AMHERST, N.Y. - The
University at Buffalo used a 14-2 run spanning the end of the first half and
beginning of the second half to take control en route to defeating the Canisius
College men's basketball team 94-59 at Alumni Arena on Tuesday night. Canisius
falls to 1-3 on the season.
Junior
Gaby Belardo led Canisius with 14

had 11 points, as the duo combined to make five 3-pointers on the night. Junior
Harold Washington scored 10 points,
all coming in the second half while junior Alshawn
Hymes chipped in 10 points as well.
"I
thought once we got down, it seemed like we were running in mud," Canisius head
coach Tom Parrotta said. "We need to
get back to the drawing board and get consistent performances from guys that
are on the floor for a majority of the minutes. It starts with me. We have to
work harder and we need to use this as a learning experience. I give a lot of
credit to UB tonight because they came in and put it to us pretty good."
Canisius
built an early 15-10 lead after an 8-2 run that featured a banked 3-pointer
from the right wing by Groves and
five straight points from Belardo. The Bulls responded with 11 straight points,
holding Canisius without a basket for three and a half minutes until a putback
from freshman Josiah Heath cut the
Buffalo cushion to 21-17.
After
a baseline jumper from Heath knocked the Buffalo lead to 27-22, the Bulls got two
free throws and a dunk from Mitchell Watt to go up 31-22. A jumper from Groves trimmed the Buffalo lead back to seven, but another basket from Watt let the host Bulls regain a
nine-point lead. Canisius then used a jumper from Belardo and 3-pointer from
Groves to make it 33-29 with 2:34 left in the half. Buffalo would hold Canisius
without a basket for the rest of the half and sent the teams into the locker room with Buffalo holding a 39-29 advantage.
Buffalo
(3-1) carried that run to the second half, jumping out to a 45-31 margin on the
3-pointer from the right wing from Zach Filzen. Out of a timeout, Canisius
attempted to pick up the tempo and got five quick points - a 3-pointer from
Belardo and a jumper from Washington - to cut the Buffalo lead to 45-36.
Buffalo
pushed its hold back into double digits and used a layup from Tony Watson put
the Bulls up 53-39. Canisius then got a jumper from Hymes, another 3-pointer
from Belardo and a layup from freshman Franklin Milian to get the lead back down to nine, 55-46, with 12:27 left. Canisius
could never get the lead under nine points as Buffalo went on a 7-0 run -
including a 3-pointer from Filzen and dunk from Watt - to go up 62-46 midway
through the second half and break the game open.
Five
Buffalo players reached double figures, led by 19 points from Filzen. Watt had
16 points and four blocks while Titus Robinson and Watson each scored
13 points. Buffalo shot 52.5 percent from the field and 25-for-31 from the
free-throw line while holding a 43-25 edge on the boards.
