No. 12 Lake Superior State Defeats Hockey, 4-2

The Canisius College hockey team lost to nationally-ranked Lake Superior State, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The Griffs fall to 2-6-3 on the season with the loss, while the No. 12 Lakers improve to 9-3-2.

"Today was a game that we controlled the tempo, the physical play and the flow but Lake Superior State was more opportunistic than us," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "We worked hard to generate offense but couldn't find a rebound when we needed them."

Sophomore Taylor Law scored both goals for the Griffs and now owns the team lead on the season with four tallies during the 2011-12 campaign.

The Lakers opened the scoring 13:37 into the contest when a cross-ice pass led to Zach Trotman's power-play tally. Lake Superior State added a second special-teams goal just 1:16 later with a short-handed tally. A Laker clearing attempt took an awkward bounce past the Canisius point and led to a breakaway score by Stephen Perfetto for the 2-0 advantage after one period.

The Griffs cut their deficit in half when Law netted his first of two goals on the day 13:10 into the second frame. Sophomore defender Ben Danford fired a shot wide of the net and off the boards. Law then finished with a high shot on the other side to bring the Griffs within one. Sophomore Patrick Sullivan also registered an assist on the tally.

Lake Superior State quickly responded with two goals less than three minutes after Canisius' score. Domenic Monardo buried his shot with 4:44 remaining in the second frame and Ben Power tipped a shot into the back of the net from in front of the goal just 41 seconds later for a 4-1 lead.

Law and the Griffs answered right back on the power play when the sophomore netted his second goal just 1:23 following the Lakers' run. Sophomore Kyle Gibbons found his classmate in the slot and Law scored to bring Canisius within two after the second period. Danford added his second assist of the afternoon on the goal.

Canisius, however, was unable to get any closer in the final period of play. The Griffs continued to put the pressure on, firing 13 shots on goal during the frame, but could not find the back of the net.

The Griffs controlled the tempo during the contest, outshooting Lake Superior State, 33-22. Both teams converted 1-of-3 power-play attempts.

Kevin Kapalka recorded 31 saves to earn the victory for the Lakers, while senior Dan Morrison posted 18 saves for the Griffs.

Canisius returns to Atlantic Hockey play next weekend with a pair of games at AIC. The Griffs and the Yellow Jackets begin the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius outshot an opponent for the first time this season ... The 22 shots allowed by the Griffs are the fewest allowed this season, topping the mark of 30 against Bentley ... Law netted the second multi-goal game of his career ... The other was also against a nationally-ranked school when he recorded two goals against No. 13 Wisconsin on Jan. 8, 2011 ... Morrison has not allowed a third-period goal in his last five games and last 100:35 of action during the frame ... Canisius is now 3-17-2 all-time against nationally-ranked schools and 3-17-4 versus CCHA teams.
