Griffs Dominate AIC, 8-3

The Canisius College hockey team cruised to victory against AIC on Monday night, earning an 8-3 win at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. With the win, the Griffs improve to 8-11-5 on the season and 7-6-4 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-15-1 and 4-12-1 in league action.

Senior captain Phil Rauch capped off the evening. Playing in his 118th career game, Rauch netted his first collegiate goal in the victory and added an assist for two points.

"It felt great to score my first goal," Rauch said. "It was kind of an on-going joke about me not getting one but it finally feels good to get one. I've been planning some celebrations and when it happened, I just mixed them all together."

Senior Cory Conacher led the Griffs with two scores on the night, extending the program's career goals record he set the previous night. The senior also netted his 10th career game-winning tally, establishing a new school standard.

Senior Vincent Scarsella recorded three points, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Seniors Chris Forsman and Eric Rex, sophomore Preston Shupe and freshman Ryan Bohrer rounded out the scoring for the Griffs with a goal each.

Sophomore defender Wes Love added three assists on the night, setting a new career high. In goal, freshman netminder Tony Capobianco stopped 36 shots to earn the victory.

"We came ready to play tonight," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "Our power play helped us with some momentum at key times. What I will remember from tonight is that Phil got his first goal and had a great celebration."

The Griffs opened the scoring 4:58 into the contest when Rex netted his second short-handed goal of the season. While a man down, Rauch chipped the puck up to Scarsella, who found Rex in the neutral zone. The senior then skated in and made a move to beat the AIC goaltender for the early 1-0 advantage.

Conacher then stretched the Griffs' lead to two with 3:50 remaining in the opening frame. Freshman Ben Danford attempted to wrap the puck around the net while on the power play. The puck squirted out to Conacher in the slot and the senior found the back of the net for his sixth extra-man tally of the season. Scarsella added his second assist of the night on the goal.

The Yellow Jackets cut into the Griffs lead with a short-handed tally of their own. After a blocked pass, Tom Mele skated in and scored an unassisted goal to cut AIC's deficit in half 2:50 into the period.

Canisius quickly reclaimed its multi-score lead with a power-play score just 56 seconds later. Conacher found Shupe open on the goal line and the sophomore found a hole and scored for his sixth goal of the season. Love added an assist on the power-play tally.

Conacher then stretched the Griffs lead to three at the 6:04 mark of the period. The AIC goaltender left the crease and attempted to clear a puck in his zone. Conacher blocked the passing attempt, sending the puck back toward the goal and into the back of the net. The eventual game-winning score was Conacher's 14th tally of the season.

The Griffs stretched their lead to four when Forsman scored his first goal of the season with 6:45 left in the second. The senior ripped a shot from the blue line while on the power play to give Canisius a 5-1 lead after two periods of play. Rex and sophomore Torrey Lindsay both registered an assist on the score.

Canisius added to its lead early in the third period. Bohrer found the back of the net 2:41 into the stanza for his fourth goal of the season. Freshman Taylor Law and Love both registered assists on the goal. Scarsella then tallied his eighth goal of the season just 71 seconds later, with Shupe and Lindsay both posting assists.

AIC added two power-play goals 50 seconds apart thanks to a five-minute major penalty. Nielsson Arcibal scored seven minutes into the period with a two-man advantage, while Steve Mele quickly followed.

Rauch then finished the scoring for the night with his first collegiate score. Love sent the puck off the boards and to Bohrer, who then skated into the AIC zone. The freshman left the puck at the blue line for Rauch, who fired a shot toward the goal that ringed off the pipe and in.

"We needed the four points badly this weekend," Rauch said. "We have to keep playing hard. We played two good games and we need to carry that over, have a good week of practice and play well at Air Force."

Canisius converted 3-of-6 power-play attempts on the night, while AIC was 2-for-8 with the extra-man advantage. The Yellow Jackets also held a 39-25 edge in shots on the night. Ben Meisner and Jake Anderson combined for 17 saves in the defeat.

The Griffs are back in action on Friday, squaring off with Atlantic Hockey foe Air Force. Game time at the Cadet Ice Arena is scheduled for 9:05 p.m. ET.
