Conacher Sets Program Record in 6-4 Victory

Senior Cory Conacher netted two goals in a 6-4 victory against AIC, setting the program's Division I goals record. The win improved the Griffs' record to 7-11-5 on the season and 6-6-4 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-14-1 and 4-11-1 against league foes.

Conacher's two tallies raised his career total to 51 goals, surpassing the record of former teammate Jason Weeks, who recorded 50 scores from 2006 to 2010.

"It feels great to set the record," Conacher said. "I have to give the credit to my linemates, teammates and coaches, especially Vincent Scarsella. He is closing in on the assists record and a lot of them have been on my goals. He has really helped me get this record."

Senior Vincent Scarsella, sophomore Torrey Lindsay plus freshmen Kyle Gibbons and Taylor Law also scored in the victory. Sophomore Preston Shupe paced the Canisius attack, matching a career high with three assists.

Junior Dan Morrison recorded 29 saves in goal to earn the victory.

"It is nice to get back in league action and get two points out of it," said Canisius assistant coach B.J. Adams. "We played hard today and it was nice to see Cory get the record. It'll be another challenge tomorrow and we look forward to getting back at it."

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring 3:08 into the contest when Adam Pleskach connected on the power play.

Conacher responded with two-consecutive goals to give the Griffs the lead for good. Senior Chris Forsman fired a shot from the blue line and Conacher tipped it past the AIC goaltender 8:14 into the game. The goal tied Conacher with Weeks for the program's record.

The Burlington, Ontario native then set the record with a power-play score 2:37 into the second frame. Conacher one-timed a shot in from the blue line with a two-man advantage to give Canisius a 2-1 lead. Gibbons and freshman Ben Danford both posted assists on Conacher's record-setting score.

Canisius stretched its advantage to two when Scarsella netted a power-play goal at the 7:39 mark of the period. The senior sent a shot in from the blue line off a pass from sophomore Wes Love to give the Griffs a 3-1 lead. Shupe posted his first assist of the afternoon on the score.

AIC pulled to within one with 4:55 remaining in the second. Jon Puskar scored his fifth goal of the season on a rush as the teams headed into the second intermission with Canisius leading, 3-2.

The Griffs put the game away early in the third, scoring two goals in the first 1:53 of the stanza. Law gave Canisius a 4-2 lead, knocking in his own rebound 49 seconds into the period. Freshman Ryan Bohrer registered the assist on Law's fifth goal of the season.

Lindsay then netted the game-winning goal just 64 seconds later, also sending a rebound into the back of the net. Scarsella and Shupe both posted assists on Lindsay's third goal of the season.

Michael Penny cut into the Griffs lead at the 4:05 mark of the third, but Canisius sealed the victory when Gibbons scored an empty-net goal. AIC elected to pull its goaltender while on the power play and Shupe won a faceoff back to the freshman. Gibbons then scored from more than 190 feet out for the three-goal lead. Penny added another AIC tally, scoring an extra-attacker goal with 33 ticks left, for the 6-4 final.

"We found something today and were clicking," Conacher said. "I thought we had good team play. All four lines showed up to play and Dan Morrison played well in net. It was a complete team effort."

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Griffs, 33-24, on the afternoon. Canisius converted two of its six power-play opportunities, while AIC was 1-for-6 with the extra-man advantage. Ben Meisner stopped 18 shots for the Yellow Jackets in the defeat.

The teams wrap up the two-game series tomorrow night. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
