CANISIUS HOSTS IONA ON HALL OF FAME DAY
- The Canisius College men's basketball
team continues its three-game MAAC homestand this afternoon when the team hosts
Iona on Hall of Fame Day in the Koessler Athletic Center.
- The Golden Griffins enter this game
with an 8-10 overall record and a 2-6 MAAC mark after falling to Fairfield by a
score of 67-60 Friday night.
- The Gaels come into this game riding a
five-game winning streak.
FAST BREAK POINTS
- Canisius started the MAAC portion of the 2010-11 season at Iona Dec. 3, where
the Gaels downed the Griffs 94-85 in New Rochelle, N.Y.
- Last season, Canisius defeated Iona
77-65 when the two teams played on the Koessler Athletic Center court.
- This will be 400th MAAC regular season
game in Canisius' history.
- The Griffs were out rebounded by Fairfield in Friday's loss by a 45-30 count.
Canisius is 2-9 this season when being out rebounded by the opposition.
- As a team, Canisius shot a season-low
23.8 percent (5-for-21) from 3-point range against Fairfield.
- Sophomore Gaby Belardo scored
a team-high 15 points in the loss to Fairfield, giving him double figures in
the scoring column in three-straight games, where he's averaging 18.3 points
per game for the Blue and Gold.
- Senior Tomas Vazquez-Simmons made
a career-high seven free-throws in the loss to the Stags Friday on a
career-high nine free-throw attemtps.
- Vazquez-Simmons added two more blocks
to his school record total, and he enters this afternoon's game with 256 career
blocked shots.
- Senior Greg Logins was
good for 12 points against Fairfield, the 50th time in his career he's posted
double-figures in the scoring column.
- Senior Elton Frazier will
become the 10th player in school history to start 96 career games when his name
is called in the starting line-up this afternoon.
ABOUT THE GAELS
- Iona starts this game with a 13-6
overall record and a 7-1 record in MAAC action after beating Niagara 72-66
Friday night in Lewiston, N.Y.
- The Gaels have won five straight and 13
of their last 16 since starting the year 0-3.
- Junior forward Mike Glover leads
MAAC with his scoring average of 20.1 points per game, which ranks 17th in the
nation.
- Prior to the Niagara game, Glover was
shooting 65.9 percent from the floor, which led the nation.
- Junior guard Scott Machado leads
the country in assists per game with 8.1 helpers per game. He ranks second on
the team in scoring as well, posting 13.8 points per game.
- As a team, Iona ranks seventh
nationally in assists per game and 14th in the country in assist-to-turnover
ratio.
- The Gaels are the MAAC's top scoring
team, posting 80 points per game.
- Iona has won its seven MAAC games by an
average margin of 16.7 points per game.
CANISIUS - IONA SERIES
- This will be the 56th all-time meeting
between these two schools in a series that started Feb. 19, 1955 in The Aud in
Buffalo.
- The Griffs are 17-9 all-time in the
Koessler Athletic Center against the Gaels.
- The Griffs and the Gaels have played a
total of 15 games that have been decided by five points or less, with Iona
winning eight of those contests.
- Canisius and Iona have played 25
previous times in the month of January, with the Gaels holding a 14-11 lead in
that portion of the series.
