Hockey Welcomes Class of 2014

The Canisius College hockey team announced the addition of nine players to the Golden Griffin program on Tuesday. Forwards Ryan Bohrer, Kyle Gibbons, Taylor Law, Brian McGinty, Duncan McKellar and Patrick Sullivan, defensemen Ben Danford and Jordan Mustard plus goaltender Tony Capobianco join 18 returning letterwinners to form the 2010-11 squad.

"Our program is excited about the entire incoming class," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "We feel this class brings in size with skill and character. It is a diverse group that will have the opportunity to make an immediate difference in our lineup."

Bohrer played the last two seasons with the North Iowa Outlaws of the NAHL. The team's MVP during the 2009-10 campaign, Bohrer recorded 54 points, 14 goals and 40 assists in 58 games. The West St. Paul, Minn. native also won the state hockey championship in 2006, earning all-conference accolades.

Gibbons joins the Griffs after spending the 2009-10 campaign with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL. In his only season with the Stars, Gibbons posted 29 points, 14 goals, 15 assists and led the team with six power-play tallies.

A 2010 CCHL All-Star, Law spent the last three seasons with the Whitby Fury. The Markham, Ontario native led the team in scoring in both the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns, earning the Cliff Madduck High Scorer Award. Law accumulated 65 points, 27 goals and 38 assists during the 2009-10 campaign.

McGinty played two years with the Owatonna Express of the NAHL. During his career, McGinty totaled 57 points, 20 goals and 37 assists while with the Express. The Bethel Park, Pa. native also won a state championship in 2005.

The first player from Arizona to join the Golden Griffin program, McKellar played two seasons with the Wenatchee Wild of the NAHL. A two-time selection to the Top Prospect All-Star Team, he recorded 83 points, 31 goals and 52 assists during his two years with the Wild. McKellar was also selected by USA Hockey to represent the United States at the IIHF camp in Vierumaki, Finland.

Sullivan was a member of the Motor City Metal Jackets of the NAHL during the 2009-10 campaign, recording 23 points, 12 goals and 11 assists. The Derby, N.Y. native also played for the Kenai River Brown Bears during the 2008-09 season after graduating St. Francis High School. With the Red Raiders, Sullivan earned the team's MVP honors and was named to the MWPHL All-Star Team.

Danford spent three seasons in the NAHL, finishing his career with the Bismarck Bobcats. The Stillwater, Minn. native totaled 50 points, 18 goals and 32 assists during his career, including career-high totals of 25 points, 12 goals and 13 assists during the 2009-10 campaign. Danford also earned all-conference accolades at Stillwater High School in 2007, while receiving honorable mention in 2006.

Mustard joins the Griffs after playing for the Markham Waxers of the CCHL. Named the team's Top Defenseman, Mustard appeared in 46 games during the 2009-10 campaign, totaling 29 points, four goals and 25 assists. The Markham, Ontario native was also selected to the 2010 CCHL All-Star Team.

Capobianco played two years with the Georgetown Raiders of the OJHL, leading the league in goalie victories in each season. During the 2009-10 season, Capobianco posted a 28-7-3 record with a goals against average of 2.41 and a save percentage of .918. The team's MVP also earned all-star honors and was named the team's Player of the Year following the 2008-09 campaign.

The nine newcomers join 18 returning letterwinners from the 2009-10 team, who helped the Griffs to one of their most successful seasons at the Division I level. Canisius won its most games in nine years and advanced to the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals for the first time since the 2004.
