Rebounding
from an early 3-1 deficit, the Canisius College baseball team used a five-run
sixth inning and forced Iona into stranding 13 baserunners to finish the
weekend sweep with a 10-5 win at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. Canisius
improves to 14-8 overall and takes the early lead atop the MAAC standings with
a 3-0 mark in conference play.
Senior
Perry Silverman was 3-for-5 with two
runs scored while juniors Brian Burton
and Steve McQuail each went 2-for-4
with two runs scored. Sophomore Drew
Pettit and redshirt freshman Jarred
Flock each had two RBI on the day. Senior Mike Goemans (2-1) earned the win, allowing three runs and 10 hits
while striking out six in seven innings of work.
Silverman
jumped on the first pitch from Iona starter Matt Marley (1-3) in the bottom of
the first, depositing it over the centerfield fence and into the Griffs'
bullpen to give Canisius the early 1-0 lead.
Iona
(5-13, 0-3) responded with five hits in the top of the second off Goemans, with
Michael Chiaravalloti bringing home a run with a double down the right-field
line and Nick Rossetti driving home two RBI with a single up the middle.
Canisius
chipped away at the Iona lead, tying the game with single runs in the third and
fifth innings. Silverman led off the third with a single, moved to second and
third on wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly from Sean Jamieson. In the fifth, Pettit reached on a one-out double
down the left-field line. Silverman dropped a bunt down the third-base line and
the throw went out of play, allowing Pettit to score and tie the game at 3-3.
Canisius
broke open the game with a five-run sixth inning. McQuail beat out an infield
single and then stole second. Shayne
Willson singled to put runners on the corners and Flock doubled to left,
scoring McQuail and Willson while chasing Marley from the game. Burton followed
with an RBI single to make it 6-3. After Paul
Panik walked, the runners moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a two-RBI
single from Pettit, pushing the Canisius lead to 8-3.
A
homer from McQuail in the seventh - his fifth of the season and second in as
many games - made the score 9-3. Iona scored twice in the top of the eighth off
sophomore Ryan Fennell, but junior Josh Marshall got out a two-out,
bases-loaded jam to keep the score 9-5. The Griffs added an insurance run in
the eighth when Burton led off with a double and eventually scored on the
second Iona error of the day.
Canisius
concludes its first homestand of the season on Tuesday, when the Golden
Griffins host Le Moyne. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 3
p.m.
