Five Early Unearned Runs Cost Baseball in Home Opener

St. Bonaventure took advantage of five unearned runs in the first inning as the Canisius College baseball team lost 12-6 in its 2010 home opener at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins are now 11-8 on the season.

Senior Shayne Willson had the only multi-hit day for Canisius, going 2-for-4 along with a walk. Senior Perry Silverman also reached based three times (double, two walks) while sophomore Brad Medici was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and his first collegiate home run.

The Bonnies (4-8) scored those five unearned runs in the top of the first, as Canisius dropped two fly balls in the inning. St. Bonaventure also got a two-run homer from starting pitcher Nick Brennen to cap the five-run first.

Canisius added single runs in the first and third innings, getting a two-out RBI single from Willson in the first and a two-out RBI single from sophomore Drew Pettit in the third to make it 5-2.

Each team scored twice in the fourth, with pinch hitter Will Chomicki doubling to left center and Medici hitting a homer to left to make it 7-4.

The Bonnies added three runs in the sixth, once again capped by a two-run homer from Brennen. The Griffs responded in the sixth as they loaded the bases with walks to Chomicki and Medici and a single from Brian Burton. Chomicki was forced out at the plate when Silverman reached on a fielder's choice. After Sean Jamieson struck out, Choy singled up the middle to score Medici and Burton and make the score 10-6.

Canisius couldn't get any closer as the Bonnies added two more in the ninth on a ground-rule double from Jesse Bosnik.

Freshman Scott Whitehead (0-1) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing five unearned runs on three hits and one walk in his one inning of work. Five Canisius pitchers saw action on the day, with sophomore Ryan Fennell the only Griff to work without allowing a run, throwing two scoreless innings. St. Bonaventure used seven pitchers in the game, with Andrew Revello throwing a scoreless fifth to earn the win and Billy Urban throwing three shutout innings to receive the save.

Canisius starts MAAC play this weekend with a three-game series against Iona. The series starts with a doubleheader (nine innings, seven innings) on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
