Future
Canisius College men's basketball player Chris
Manhertz (Bronx, N.Y.) was recently named to the Team USA roster for the 25th
Albert Schweitzer Basketball Tournament, which will take place April 3-10 in
Manheim, Germany.
Currently
a senior at Cardinal Spellman High School, Manhertz will be joining 11 other
American-born players and former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Larry Krystkowiak
in what is considered by many as one of the premier junior-level basketball
tournaments in the world. Since its inception in 1958, the United States teams
have claimed 10 Schweitzer Tournament crowns, but have not won a title at the
event in the last 10 years.
Some of
the notable names that have played for Team USA in the Schweitzer event are
Magic Johnson, Vince Carter and Tim Duncan. This year's event will feature 16
teams from around the world broken into four separate pools for the preliminary
round of action. The US team's first game will be against Croatia on Saturday,
April 3.
"Anytime
you can compete in a high-level tournament like that, it's going to be
beneficial to a player's development," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "He'll experience things that not every high
school player gets to, and taking part in big games like this does nothing but help prepare players for game action at the next level."
The Golden
Griffins went 15-17 overall last season and 8-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference play. The 15 wins are the most for the program since 2000-01. The
Blue and Gold will return nine letterwinners and four starters for the 2010-11 campaign.
