Baseball Defeats Winthrop 3-1 to Take Three of Four

Another solid pitching performance, this time from the combination of Chris Cox and Andrew Van'tWout, along with timely hits in the fifth inning gave the Cansius College baseball team a 3-1 over Winthrop in the final game of the Johnny Gill Memorial Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Golden Griffins win three of four games on the weekend and improve to 10-5 on the season.

Cox made his second career start, going 5.2 innings, allowing six hits, one run and one walk while striking out three. Van'tWout threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, facing one batter over the minimum while walking one and striking out five.

The Griffs got on the board with a leadoff homer in the fourth from senior Shayne Willson. The Griffs scored twice in the top of the fifth when Perry Silverman had a one-out triple and scored on an RBI single from Sean Jamieson. Willson singled to center, advancing Jamieson to second and a two-out, RBI single from Steve McQuail scored Jamieson to make it 3-1.

Cox retired the first eight batters he faced and Winthrop (9-5) got three straight singles to start the bottom of the fourth. Cox induced a double-play grounder and then got a grounder to short to get out of the inning with only one run scoring.

Van'tWout relieved Cox in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third and two outs. The redshirt senior only allowed a two-out walk in the seventh and struck out five of the last seven batters he faced.

Canisius returns to the field for three games at Dayton next weekend. The teams start the series on Friday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.

Notes: The other start for Cox came on April 9, 2008, against St. Bonaventure when Cox earned a win in five innings pitched… In the last nine games, the Canisius bullpen has an ERA of 1.41 in 25.1 innings pitched… Silverman's triple was the first of the season by a Canisius player… Silverman is now the only player on the team to reach base in all 15 games on the season… Canisius has had a winning record in three of the first four weekends of the 2010 season.
