Canisius senior guard Frank Turner scored 16 points and
matched a career-high with 13 assists for his ninth career double-double to
help lead the Golden Griffins to a 70-66 win over James Madison Saturday night
in the Koessler Athletic Center. The win improved Canisius to 13-15 on the
year, while the Dukes slipped to 11-17 with the loss.
Turner, who was playing in his final career home game, ended
the night just three rebounds shy of posting the first triple-double in school
history. He shot 7-for-15 from the field in the win and added three steals
against just two turnovers in 40 minutes of action. Junior forward Greg Logins
returned to the lineup after missing last weekend's game against Siena to
record 15 points off the bench to go with eight rebounds, while junior Julius
Coles chipped in 12 points for the Griffs. For the night, Canisius shot 43.5
percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range while outscoring
James Madison by a 19-14 count in points off turnovers.
The Griffs led by nine at 66-57 with 4:31 left to play in
the game before the Dukes used a 9-0 run over a span of 2:59 to knot the score
at 66-66. Canisius, which didn't make a field goal in the game's final 4:31,
was able to seal the win by hitting four free throws in the closing 1:04.
Canisius used an 11-3 run early in the second half to
stretch a 39-36 lead into a 50-39 cushion with 12:56 left on the clock, capped
by a fastbreak layup by Turner. The Griffs pushed that lead to as many as 13
points at 58-45 with 10:29 left on the clock before the Dukes went on a 12-2
scoring spurt of their own to make the score 60-57 with 5:58 left on the clock.
Back-to-back Canisius 3-pointers from Coles and senior Bob
Bevilacqua allowed the Blue and Gold to stretch their lead to 66-57.
Bevilacqua, who was honored in a pregame senior ceremony along with Turner and
student-manager Chris Pedicone, ended the night with nine points after he
drained three 3-point field goals.
"This was a good, hard-fought win against a talented team,"
Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We were concerned about their size, but
we were able to use our quickness to get up and down, and they were visibly
fatigued towards the end. We made enough plays to win and I'm happy to send
[Turner and Bevilacqua] out with a win."
James Madison was led by Julius Wells, who scored a
game-high 18 points after he went 7-for-19 from the floor and 3-for-11 from
3-point range in the loss. Darren White scored 14 points off the bench, while
Denzel Bowles was credited with 11 points and nine boards. The dukes shot 44.6
percent from the game and 36.8 percent from behind the arc, while turning the
ball over 15 times.
The Griffs will close out the regular season on the road,
starting at Loyola Friday, Feb. 26. Game time in Baltimore is set for 7 p.m.
