Offense Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of Illinois-Chicago

Scoring a total of 36 runs, hitting six home runs and taking advantage of 19 walks, the Canisius College baseball team swept Illinois-Chicago in a doubleheader at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. on Saturday. The Golden Griffins won the first game 20-4 and took the second game 16-10. The Griffs open the season 3-0 for the second time in the last three years.

Seniors Paul Panik and Perry Silverman each had two homers on the day for the Griffs, with both of Panik's home runs coming in the opener for the first multi-HR game of his career. Silverman ended up 6-for-10 with three doubles and nine RBIs in the doubleheader, hitting home runs in back-to-back games for the first time of his career. Redshirt freshman Jarred Flock was 5-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs in the nightcap, tying a program record with the five hits.

Illinois-Chicago (0-3) responded to a Steve McQuail sacrifice fly in the top of the first with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Griffs would then score 19 of the final 20 runs in the game, including 15 straight.

Silverman had a three-run home run in the second while McQuail followed with a two-run shot of his own. Panik hit his first homer of the day — a three-run home run — in the fourth while Silverman had an RBI double to make it 10-3. Panik hit a homer for the second consecutive inning in the sixth, a two-run shot to left to make it 12-3. Canisius added four runs in the eighth and ninth innings, highlighted by two-RBI doubles from Sean Jamieson and Josh Lewyckyj.

Senior Mike Goemans allowed three runs, one earned, in his four innings of work. Sophomore Ryan Fennell (1-0) pitched four innings of relief, allowing one run to pick up his second career win.

The teams played a slugfest in the second game, with each team scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. After Illinois-Chicago scored a run in the bottom of the second, Silverman put Canisius up 2-1 with a one-out homer in the third.

The Griffs sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Four Griffs drove in runs — Flock had an RBI single, Silverman had a two-RBI double, McQuail had an RBI single and Shayne Willson capped the inning with a three-run homer to center.

The Flames would rally for seven runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of an error, hit by pitch and walk and using two home runs to make the score 9-8. Chris Rutta had a three-run home run and Ryan Meehan had a two-run homer to cap the UIC rally.

After Brad Medici scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-8 in the fifth, the Griffs broke open the game with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Flock had an RBI double and Silverman had an RBI single while Lewyckyj scored when Silverman got caught in a rundown to make it 13-8. The three runs in the eighth came on an RBI groundout by Brian Burton, squeeze bunt from Medici and RBI single from Flock.

Redshirt freshman Billy Martin made his first career start and allowed eight runs on eight hits and four walks in four innings pitched. Redshirt senior Andrew Van'tWout (1-0) earned his first career win by yielding two runs on four hits while striking out five in four innings of relief. Senior Chris Cox retired the side in the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Canisius concludes the weekend with a single, nine-inning game against Wright State on Sunday. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m.

Notes: Freshmen who made their Canisius debuts in the doubleheader included Charlie LoBosco (one innings of relief), Kevin Whitehead (1-for-1, run scored), Frank Polino (0-for-1) and Lewyckyj (1-for-1, 3 RBI)… Mike Deuschle made his first appearance since the 2007 season after missing the past two years with injuries… In the first game, six of the 13 Canisius batters who drew walks came around to score… Junior Will Chomicki was hit by a pitch twice in the first game and scored a career-high three runs… Canisius was 10-for-11 on stolen base attempts in the doubleheader… Silverman set a career high with four RBIs in the first game and then topped it with five RBI in the second game… Panik matched career highs with the five RBIs and five runs scored, which tie a program record.
