In the first day of the MAAC Championship, the Golden
Griffins set a total eight school records through 12 events. Sophomore standouts
Stephen Pochatko set two personal records and lead off the men's record setting
medley relay while Erica Vitale set a school record for the women. The Griffs
will compete in three days of events before the Championship title is
determined.
Pochatko placed 11th overall in the conference
with his 50-yard freestyle time, finishing the race in a school record 21.36. He
also set a school record with the lead off 100-yard backstroke in the
record-setting medley relay. Pochatko, freshman Tyler Carver, and seniors Kevin
Ernst and Randall Pochatko completed the 3:30.89 relay team, taking fifth place
in the race overall. Freshman Mike Disco also set a school record in the 200-yard
individual medley with his time of 1:58.65.
Vitale earned a personal best time as she reset the school's
200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.69, tying for 11th
place in the conference.
The MAAC All-Academic selections were also announced, with
ten Canisius student-athletes gracing the list. Seniors Carl Anderson, John
Morphis and Andrea Betts were all named for the third time, while juniors Jack
Kennon and Courtney Marcolini were awarded the accolades for the second
consecutive year. Sophomores Amina Benman, Michelle Niblock, Kara Powalski,
Julia Terrien and Erica Vitale have all been recognized for the first time.
The second day of the MAAC Championships will consist of events 13 through 30. There is a new
