Mead’s School Record Leads the Way for Swimming and Diving at MAAC Championships

Sophomore Daphne Mead set a school record in the 200-yard IM with her time of 2:02.79 to place second, as the Canisius men's and women's swimming and diving programs took part in day two of the 2026 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio.

Mead's second-place finish in the 200-IM is her second medal at the 2026 Championships after she was a part of the Golden Griffins' 800-free relay team that placed third on Wednesday evening. Her time of 2:02.79 is 1.03 seconds faster than her previous career record in the 200-IM that she set at the 2025 MAAC Championships, and it is 0.71 seconds faster than the previous school record, which was held by former Griff Lana Janson.

Fellow junior Evie Leighton placed eighth in the women's 500-yard freestyle race, as the Canisius women's team remained in eighth place overall with 192 points. Marist leads the team portion of the championship meet with 457 points.

On the men's side, freshman diver Leo Rodriguez earned 10th place in the 3-meter diving competition with 126.85 points. Canisius' entry in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, a team consisting of sophomore Cameron Upchurch and freshmen Jacob Matuschka, Peyton Gilliland and Hugh Hawkins, took sixth with a time of 1:23.32.

As a team, the Canisius men are in seventh place after two days at the conference's championship event with 207 points.

The third day of the 2026 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships will start at 9:30 a.m., on Friday morning.
