Choy Named Lowe's Senior CLASS Candidate

Senior Ian Choy (Mississauga, Ontario) was selected as one of 30 collegiate baseball players as a candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition.

CLASS is an acronym Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Choy, a preseason all-MAAC selection at the beginning of February, was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection in 2009. The two-time member of the MAAC all-Academic Team, Choy is pursuing a degree in economics with a concentration in finance. A co-captain of the Canisius baseball team, Choy is also a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Canisius.

The outfielder has participated in several community service projects, including Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. Choy was an all-MAAC First-Team selection in 2009 and 2007, the 2007 MAAC Rookie of the Year and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2007. Choy has a .335 career batting average and has 173 career hits.

Choy is the second Canisius College student-athlete to be named a Lowe's Senior CLASS candidate this season as Andrew Loewen of the Canisius hockey team earned the honor in October. Choy is one of two players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to receive the honor, along with Kevin Nieto from Manhattan.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans.

Canisius opens the season against Wright State on Friday, in Cary, N.C.
