Baseball Falls in Series Finale Against Quinnipiac

Jack Balcer went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI as Quinnipiac defeated Canisius, 12-2, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
The Bobcats improved to 16-21 overall and 9-9 in the MAAC with Sunday's series finale win. The Griffs, meanwhile, fell to 11-21 overall with an 8-10 conference record.
 
Balcer highlighted a Quinnipiac lineup that registered 14 hits in the contest. Kyle Garbowski finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, highlighted by his game-sealing two-run double in the seventh. Nick Balcom recorded the win for the Bobcats, tossing six innings, allowing two runs and striking out eight.
 
Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki went 2-for-2 at the plate as the drove in boht of the Griffs' runs, highlighted by his homer in the first. Freshman Mark Rogers recorded the loss after three innings on the mound, allowing four runs.
 
Canisius jumped out to an early lead in the first as Zwirecki blasted a solo shot for his fourth home run of the season to put the Griffs in front.
 
Quinnipiac responded in the following two frames, with Alex Irizarry starting the damage in the second with an RBI double. In the third, Garbowski launched a solo shot, followed by a two-run homer from Balcer, putting the Bobcats in front a 4-1 margin.
 
Balcer launched his second homer of the day with a solo shot in the top of the fifth before Zwirecki picked up his second RBI of the day in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single to center field, making it a 5-2 Bobcats advantage.
 
The Bobcats broke the game open in the seventh as they plated seven runs, highlighted by doubles from Ian Nilsen and Cole Constable. Garbowski's two-run double with two outs closed out the 12-2 win for Quinnipiac.
 
GAME NOTES
• Quinnipiac now leads the all-time series between the two programs, 21-15, after Sunday's win.
• Redshirt freshman Bennett Cox extended his hit streak to 12 games with his single in the third.
• Zwirecki's solo homer in the first marked the 12th of his career. The catcher leads the Golden Griffins with his 25 RBI and 51 total bases.
• Freshman Grady Brown and junior Andrew Marcello both collected their fifth stolen bases in Sunday's loss.
• The Bobcats' pitching staff struck out 10 batters, compared to seven for Canisius.
• Quinnipiac's pitching staff also did not issue a walk, holding the Griffs without a free pass in the contest.

UP NEXT
Canisius returns to action Tuesday as it travels to Syracuse for a non-conference contest against Le Moyne. First pitch between the Griffs and Dolphins is slated for 3 p.m. at Dick Rockwell Field.
