Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Quinnipiac

Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki went 3-for-3 with an RBI to help propel Canisius to a 10-3 win over Quinnipiac in game one of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
The Bobcats moved to 15-21 overall and 8-9 in the MAAC after taking game two of the doubleheader with a 3-0 shutout. The Golden Griffins saw their record shift to 11-20 overall and 8-9 in conference with the game two setback.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
Sophomore Noah Albano was credited with the win in game one as he delivered three innings out of the bullpen, allowing four hits and striking out three. James Pazdera took the loss in game one for Quinnipiac after allowing five runs in 2.1 innings of work.
 
Canisius delivered the game's first three runs in the first two frames as redshirt freshman Bennett Cox delivered an RBI double, followed by an run-scoring single from junior JC Spinosa to give the Griffs the early 2-0 lead. In the second, Zwirecki picked up an RBI single to extend the lead to three.
 
Quinnipiac got on the board in the third as an RBI single off the bat of Christian Smith trim the Griffs lead to two.
 
The Griffs responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame as junior Eric Weeks recorded an RBI triple before scoring on a wild pitch to give Canisius a 5-1 lead.
 
Quinnipiac pulled within three in the top of the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single from Chase Camac.
 
Canisius took advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth as senior Mason Cisco got hit by a pitch and Cox delivered a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
 
Quinnipiac added one more run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Alex Irizarry. The Griffs then loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the frame, scoring three more runs to secure the 10-3 win.
 
GAME TWO RECAP
Junior Joe LoPinto got the nod for Canisius in game two, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing three runs and fanning two as he was saddled with the loss. Andrew Rubayo was credited with his fourth win on the season, delivering six scoreless innings and striking out eight.
 
The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the second as Ian Nilsen plated one on an RBI groundout to give Quinnipiac the lead.
 
Quinnipiac added to its advantage in the sixth as James Marino plated one with the bases loaded to extend the lead to two.
 
The Bobcats wrapped up the scoring in the seventh as Kyle Garbowski lifted a sacrificle fly to right. Canisius was unable to mount a comeback as Quinnipiac limited the Griffs to just four hits in the 3-0 win.
 
GAME NOTES
• Quinnipiac now leads the all-time series between the two programs, 20-15, after Friday's split.
• Cox extended his hitting streak to 11 games, with his two hits in each of Friday's games. The redshirt freshman now leads the Griffs with his .333 batting average and 24 runs.
• Spinosa recorded his fifth multiple RBI game this season with his two runs batted in during the opener. The junior now has 17 on the season.
• Senior Felix Morin got the nod on the hill in game one, tallying six strikeouts, moving his season total to 45.
• Weeks recorded two RBI in game one on Friday. The junior has plated five RBI in his last four appearances.
• The Bobcats left 20 men on base in Friday's doubleheader, compared to 18 for Canisius.
• The Qunnipiac pitching staff delivered 15 strikeouts, compared to 14 for the Griffs.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius and Quinnipiac will conclude their MAAC series on April 19. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
