GRIFFS TUNE UP FOR 2010-11 AGAINST BUFFALO STATE

  • The Canisius College men's basketball team will hit the court for one final tune-up on Tuesday night when the Golden Griffins play host to the Buffalo State Bengals in an exhibition game.
  • This marks the first exhibition game for the Griffs since Nov. 6, 2005 when the Blue and Gold defeated McMaster 91-67 at home.
  • Canisius and Buffalo State have never played an exhibition game - the two schools have 23 previous times during the regular season, with the Griffs winning 20 of those matchups.

FAST BREAK POINTS

  • Canisius returns eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that went 15-17 overall and 8-10 in MAAC play.
  • The 15 wins for the Griffs stand as the most for the program since 2000-01.
  • Senior guard Julius Coles and senior forward Greg Logins were honored as Preseason All-MAAC selections Oct. 26 at the conference's annual Media Day event.
  • Coles, who ranks 10th in school history with 115 career 3-point field goals made, was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Second Team.
  • Logins, who starts the year 84 points shy of becoming the 30th player in school history to score 1,000 points in his career, was honored as a Preseason All-MAAC Third-Team choice.
  • Fellow senior Tomas Vazquez-Simmons will start his senior season with 211 career blocks, which is tops in school history and sixth-best in MAAC history.

SCOUTING BUFFALO STATE

  • The Bengals played an exhibition game against Sheridan College (Ontario) Nov. 5 and posted an 89-79 win.
  • Buffalo State went 11-14 last season.
  • Sophomore Jake Simmons was named the 2010 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Simmons is the brother of Canisius senior Tomas Vazquez-Simmons.

THE CANISIUS-BUFFALO STATE SERIES

  • The Griffs and Bangals have played 23 times in the regular season, with Canisius holding a 20-3 advantage in the series.
  • The last time these two schools met in the regular season was Dec. 7, 1983 in the Koessler Athletic Center, where the Griffs recorded a 78-76 win.
  • This series dates back to Dec. 18, 1926, when Canisius beat Buffalo State 39-23 on the road.

CANISIUS HELPING JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH

  • The Canisius athletic department and the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) have joined forces to help raise awareness and money for the New York Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
  • As part of this year-long initiative, half of the proceeds from the exhibition game between Canisius and Buffalo State will be donated to the JDRF.
