After recording one of the best starts in the program's
history, three Canisius College hockey players were honored by Atlantic Hockey
on Tuesday with monthly awards. Senior Cory
Conacher earned Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month
accolades, junior Dan Morrison was named the Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month and freshman
Kyle Gibbons picked
up the league's Rookie of the Month.
Conacher, the reigning Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year,
picked up right where he left off last season, posting 10 points, six goals and
four assists. In his first game of the season, the senior recorded his second
career hat trick and added an assist in a 5-3 victory over CCHA foe Western
Michigan. He also recorded multiple points against Sacred Heart (two goals) and
Army (one goal and one assist) during the month. Conacher currently leads all
players in Atlantic Hockey in both points and goals.
During his career, Conacher has amassed 115 points, 45 goals
and 70 assists in 99 contests. He currently ranks third in the program's
Division I history in points and assists, while placing fourth in goals.
Conacher, who earned the monthly accolade for the second time in his career, is
also tied for first in school history with nine career game-winning goals.
Morrison anchored the Canisius defense during the season's
opening month. In seven October games, Morrison posted a 4-2-1 record with a
1.97 goals against average and .947 save percentage. The junior currently ranks
first in the country with 250 total saves, fifth in save percentage and 12th in
goals against average.
During the month, Morrison also recorded his fifth-career
shutout, moving him to within one of the program's Division I record, shared by
Andrew Loewen and Bryan Worosz. In his career, Morrison has posted a 22-22-6
record with a 2.92 goals against average and .913 save percentage.
Gibbons completed the monthly sweep for Canisius, starting
his career strong. In his first seven collegiate games, the rookie tallied
eight points, five goals and three assists. His eight points currently lead all
Atlantic Hockey freshmen by at least three. Gibbons also ranks eighth in
Division I among rookies with 1.14 points per game and is one of only two
first-year players with two game-winning goals.
The Westlake, Ohio native recorded multiple points in three
of his first seven collegiate games to get his career started strong. He twice
netted two goals and added an assist in victories over Mercyhurst and Army,
while also posting a goal and an assist in a win over Sacred Heart.
The three players helped lead Canisius to one of its best
starts in the program's history. The Griffs won four games during the month of
October for the first time in school history, while its seven points through
five league games is the second-best start in the program's Division I history.
The Griffs return to the ice on Tuesday night, hosting local
rival Niagara at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Game time is scheduled for
7:05 p.m.
