The Canisius College and Army hockey teams both tallied three power-play goals en route to a 4-4 draw at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Saturday night. The Griffs are now 11-10-3 on the season and 9-7-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Black Knights stand at 7-11-4 and 6-7-3 against league foes.
"We showed a tremendous desire to win tonight," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "Just Owen Meyer and their power play were too good. The power play was the story of the game tonight. We had a great stretch in the second period that got us back in the game and then they answered back with two goals."
Senior Jason Weeks netted one of the Griffs' power play scores and in the process tied the program's Division I record for career scores. Weeks and former Griff David Deeves (1998-02) are tied for the most career goals in school history with 49.
Junior Vincent Scarsella led Canisius with three points, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Senior Josh Heidinger and freshman Preston Shupe also added a goal, while junior Cory Conacher registered two assists.
Sophomore Dan Morrison recorded 34 saves in net to earn the draw.
Army opened the scoring with its first power-play goal of the night 14:11 into the contest. Andy Starczewski found Danny Colvin open on the back door as the Black Knights scored the lone goal in the first period.
The Black Knights stretched their lead to two 7:23 into the second stanza, taking advantage of a Canisius turnover. Army skated in on a 2-on-1 break and Starczewski fed Kyle Maggard for the goal.
Canisius answered back and scored on its next three power-play chances in the second period. At the 13:47 mark, Conacher passed the puck through the slot to Heidinger and the senior scored on the open goal to cut the Army lead to one, 2-1. Senior Carl Hudson also registered an assist on the goal.
The Griffs then took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play when Shupe scored his fifth goal of the season. Heidinger passed the puck to Scarsella on the goal line and the junior found Shupe stationed in front of the goal. Shupe then knocked the puck in to knot the game at two with 1:32 left in the second.
Canisius took its first lead of the night just 51 seconds later when Weeks scored his eighth goal of the season. On a rush, sophomore Dave Kostuch knocked the puck to Scarsella, who then gave it to Weeks right in front of the goal. Weeks then buried the shot for the 3-2 lead and for the school record-tying goal.
Army would respond in the third period, scoring a pair of power play goals to reclaim the lead, 4-3. Owen Meyer scored both Black Knight goals at the 4-minute and 10:32 marks of the third period.
Canisius tied the game with when Scarsella netted his ninth goal of the season. Senior Dave Cianfrini fired a shot toward goal but it was blocked. Conacher found the puck and fed Scarsella, who knotted the contest with 7:07 left in regulation.
The teams would battle back-and-forth the remainder of the game but neither school was able to find the back of the net again. Army's Jay Clark recorded 26 saves in net.
"We battled back and showed a lot of heart tonight," Scarsella said. "We kept things simple on our power play and did a good job of getting pucks to the net. Every game is so important and it was nice to get a point out of this."
The Black Knights held a 38-30 advantage in shots and were 3-for-7 on the power play. Canisius went 3-for-6 with the extra-man advantage.
Canisius returns to the ice next weekend, playing a two-game series at Sacred Heart. The teams will meet on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
