Baseball Completes Sweep at Siena

ALBANY, N.Y. ? Jumping out to a four-run lead in the first, the Canisius College baseball team got a complete game from Mike Goemans and finished the weekend sweep with a 7-1 win at Siena on Sunday.

Canisius improves to 28-19 on the season and 11-7 in the MAAC as the Griffs have won five straight and 13 of their last 16 games. Canisius moves into a tie with Marist for third place in the MAAC.

Junior Ian Choy and sophomore Steve McQuail led the Canisius offense with two hits on the day. Branson Joseph and McQuail added two RBI apiece while Kevin Mailloux scored two runs.

Goemans allowed six hits and one unearned run, walked one and struck out five to improve to 6-3 on the season. The junior worked out of a jam in the first, getting two consecutive comeback groundballs to get out of a second and third, one-out jam. Goemans also induced double-play groundballs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Canisius scored four runs in the first inning on just one hit. The first three Golden Griffin batters were hit by a pitch and Kevin Mahoney drew a bases-loaded walk to force home the first Canisius run. Joseph grounded out to first and the throw home to get Choy was wild, allowing Mailloux also to score on the play. McQuail followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

McQuail went opposite-field in the third, sneaking a homer inside the right-field foul pole to give Canisius a 5-0 lead for his sixth homer of the season. The Saints added one in the fourth but Canisius added single runs in the fifth and sixth. Joseph had an RBI single in the fifth while Connor Burke had an RBI double in the sixth to give Canisius a 7-1 lead.

Canisius returns to the Demske Sports Complex for a six-game homestand to end the regular season. The Griffs play Fairfield in a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius swept a series for the first time this season... Goemans threw a complete game for the first time since April 21, 2007, against Fairfield... In six conference starts, Goemans improved to 4-2 with a 2.38 earned run average... Joseph now has 30 RBI since the beginning of April and 17 RBI in 18 MAAC games...
