Baseball Drops Series Finale at Rider

Getting two runs on solo homers and allowing four two-out runs, the Canisius College baseball team lost 4-2 at Rider University on Sunday. The Golden Griffins, who took two of three games in the series, fall to 14-15 overall and 3-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer from Kevin Mailloux. Rider (11-12, 5-4 MAAC) took the lead in the bottom of the inning with three consecutive two-out hits. Sean Olson doubled to center, Mason Heyne doubled home Olson and Steve Galella singled home Heyne to make it 2-1.

The Griffs tied it in the third on a solo homer from Ian Choy, his third home run of the weekend. Rider scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, taking the lead on a two-out RBI double from James Hayes in the fourth. The Broncs went up 4-2 in the fifth when Maurice Williams singled with two outs and scored on an error by Canisius center fielder Branson Joseph on a fly ball from John Ralston.

Canisius had its best chance to score in the ninth when Brian Burton and Joseph strung together one-out singles to put runners at the corner. However, Hayes came in for Rider to strike out Perry Silverman and Paul Panik to end the game.

Mike Goemans (3-2) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings. Rider's Patrick Devlin earned the win by allowing two runs in 8.1 innings of work.

Canisius had a mid-week game at Kent State on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

Game Notes: Choy hit three home runs on the weekend. Prior to the series, Choy had four home runs in his career... Sophomore catcher Andrew Russo made his second start of the season... Matt Weber threw a 1.1 innings of relief and now has allowed one earned run in his last 13.1 innings... Starting with the March 16 game at Morehead State, Choy is 22-for-42 and has raised his average to a team-best .388... Joseph made his first error in 93 games, with his last error coming April 28, 2007.
