Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Manhattan

The Canisius College baseball team rebounded with a game two win, to split a doubleheader at first-place Manhattan on Saturday. The Golden Griffins lost the opener 11-4 to the Jaspers in and won the second game 9-2.

Canisius is now 23-18 on the season and 8-6 in the MAAC. The Griffs snap Manhattan's home winning streak at 21 games, which was the longest streak in the country.

Senior Kevin Mailloux led Canisius with four hits on the day while senior Kevin Mahoney had two homers, giving him 16 on the season. Senior Alec Cabello had three hits and two RBI. Sophomore Steve McQuail had two-RBI singles in the second game.

Redshirt sophomore Shane Davis (6-2) threw his third consecutive complete game. Davis allowed two runs, one earned, in seven innings while striking out four and walking one.

After Manhattan (27-11, 12-2) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Canisius scored twice in the top of the second on an RBI double from McQuail and an RBI single from Cabello. Manhattan responded with an RBI single from Jamie Fitzgerald to tie the game at 2-2.

The Griffs then scored seven unanswered runs ? one in the third, three in the fourth and three in the ninth. Mahoney gave Canisius a 3-2 lead with a two-out, solo homer to right.

Perry Silverman led off the fourth with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Cabello. After a groundout and fly out moved Cabello to third, Shayne Willson doubled down the left-field line to score Cabello. Mailloux followed with a single to left to make it 6-2.

Willson started the seventh with a single and scored on a one-out homer from Mahoney. Branson Joseph then was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single from McQuail.

In the first game, the Griffs took advantage of two Manhattan errors as Connor Burke reached on an error, moved to second on a groundout and would come around to score after stealing third and scoring on another error.

The Griffs scored another run in the third when Burke again reached on an error and Ian Choy walked to put runners at first and second. The two runners moved up on a wild pitch and a walk to Mahoney loaded the bases. Willson produced an RBI groundout to score Burke and make it 2-0.

The Jaspers scored one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Canisius tied the game in the fifth when Choy led off with a single, and the bases were loaded after two-out walks to Willson and Joseph. Another Manhattan error on a grounder from Brian Gibbs scored Choy to make the score 3-3.

Manhattan broke open the game with a six-run sixth inning. Austin Sheffield had an RBI double, Fitzgerald had a sacrifice fly, Kevin Nieto had an RBI double and Mike McCann had a three-run homer that made the score 9-3.
