Baseball Takes Series with 7-1 Win

Getting another solid pitching performance from junior Mike Goemans, the Canisius College baseball team won its third consecutive MAAC series with a 7-1 win over Saint Peter's at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday.

Canisius improves to 21-17 overall and 7-5 in the MAAC. The Golden Griffins have won nine of their last 12 games.
Senior Kevin Mailloux led the Canisius offense with a 3-for-5 effort, to go along with a home run and two RBIs. Three other Griffs had two hits ? Steve McQuail, Branson Joseph and Brian Burton.

Goemans (5-2) went 8.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking two and striking out seven. The lefty induced three double plays on the day and faced 19 batters, one over the minimum, from the third through eighth innings.

McQuail got Canisius on the board with a solo homer to left on the first pitch from Saint Peter's starter Craig Hughes (2-3). After the Peacocks tied the game in the top of the second, Canisius scored two in the bottom of the inning, getting a bases-loaded walk from Ian Choy and RBI single from Mailloux.

Shayne Willson led off the bottom of the third with a double and scored on a one-out single from Joseph to make it 4-1. Mailloux's solo homer in the fourth pushed the lead to 5-1. Kevin Mahoney followed with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Saint Peter's error and then scored on another Saint Peter's error.

The Griffs scored for the fifth consecutive inning when McQuail led off the fifth with a single and Choy reached on an error, with the throw going out of play and putting runners at second and third. Mailloux grounded to second, and Choy got caught in a rundown to put runners at the corners. The Griffs then executed a double steal, with McQuail's run making it 7-1.

Canisius plays two mid-week games, starting at St. Bonaventure on Tuesday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

Game Notes: Mailloux's homer was his 10th of the season, as he joined Mahoney as the only two players in program history with two seasons of 10 home runs or more... The win was the 15th for Goemans in his career... Willson got the final two outs of the game, his first pitching appearance since April 5, at Rider... Canisius has committed zero errors in five of the last seven games... McQuail's leadoff homer was the second of the season for the Griffs at the Demske Sports Complex as Perry Silverman had a leadoff homer in the home opener against Buffalo... Canisius left a season-high 14 runners on base... Goemans has now won four of his last five starts and is 3-1 in MAAC play with a 1.98 ERA.
