Another Late, Five-Run Inning Leads Baseball to Victory

For the second consecutive day, the Canisius College baseball team used a five-run inning late in the game to pick up a victory. The Griffs rallied from a three-run deficit in the seventh inning to earn an 8-5 victory over St. Bonaventure at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday.

The Golden Griffins improve to 19-16 and are on a four-game winning streak for the second time this season.
Senior Kevin Mailloux led the Griffs with a 2-for-2 effort, reaching base in all five plate appearances while scoring three runs. Senior Kevin Mahoney was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while sophomore Steve McQuail had the game-winning, two-run double for the second straight game.

Down 5-2 entering the seventh, Ian Choy got the rally started with a one-out solo home run to right, his fifth home run in the last nine games. Mailloux followed with a triple and Mahoney made it 5-4 with a double. Mahoney stole third and after Branson Joseph walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position, McQuail doubled to right center and put the Griffs up 6-5. McQuail moved to third on a groundout by Perry Silverman and scored on a throwing error later in the inning.

The Griffs added an insurance run in the eighth when Mallioux walked, stole second and came around to score on a double from Mahoney.

St. Bonaventure (16-12) got the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth with two one-out singles and a walk off Canisius reliever Aaron Boag. Senior Ryan McGorman entered the game with one out and the bases loaded. The Griffs' closer got Michael Grieco to strike out looking and recorded a force out at second on to end the game.

Freshman Alek Brown went five innings for the Griffs, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking none and striking out two. Freshman Ryan Fennell picked up his first career win by throwing two shutout innings. McGorman earned his third save of the season.
