Baseball Pounds Iona to Take Rain-Delayed Series

The Canisius College baseball team produced 11 extra-base hits en route to a 20-2 victory over Iona on Monday afternoon. The victory gives Canisius the series win over the Gaels, as the teams split a doubleheader on Friday. Canisius improves to 17-16 on the season, 5-4 in the MAAC and has now won five of its last seven games.

Senior Kevin Mahoney matched program records with his five runs scored, five hits and seven RBIs. The third baseman also hit two home runs in the game, giving him 13 on the season and matching the single-season record of 13 by Todd Schell from the 1994 season.

Senior Kevin Mailloux was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Senior Connor Burke was 4-for-7 with three doubles out of the leadoff spot while Shayne Willson, Steve McQuail and Jon VanRemmen each had two hits for the Golden Griffins.

Junior Mike Goemans (4-2) won for the fourth time in his last five starts. The lefty went seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six. Sophomore Josh Marshall threw two scoreless innings of relief.

Canisius jumped on Iona (2-26-1, 2-7 MAAC) from the start, with five runs in the first inning, as Canisius scored in six of the first seven innings on the day. Mailloux had a three-run homer in the first and Canisius then scored two unearned runs in the later in the inning, taking advantage of three of Iona's six errors in the game.

Mahoney had a three-run homer in the second while Ian Choy added a leadoff homer in the third to make it 10-0. Canisius added three more runs in the sixth, getting a two-RBI double from Mahoney and an RBI single from Willson. The Griffs scored six in the seventh, batting around for the third time in the game. Mahoney had a two-RBI homer and Perry Silverman had a two-RBI double to go along with RBI singles from VanRemmen and Paul Panik.

Canisius returns to Western New York for two midweek games against Big Four rivals. The Griffs play at Buffalo on Tuesday, with game time set for 3 p.m. before hosting St. Bonaventure on Wednesday.
