Davis Throws One-Hitter as Baseball Splits Doubleheader

Redshirt sophomore Shane Davis had his best start of the season, regaining his 2008 form with a one-hit shutout in a 6-0 win for the Canisius College baseball team over Iona on Friday. The Golden Griffins split the doubleheader after a 6-2 loss to the Gaels in the opener.

Senior Connor Burke led the Griffs (16-16, 4-4 MAAC) with three hits in the win while senior Branson Joseph had two hits and a steal. Sophomore Brian Burton recorded three RBIs without recording a hit.

Canisius got on the board in the third when Steve McQuail led off with a single and moved to second on an error. After a bunt single from Ian Choy, Kevin Mailloux scored McQuail on a sacrifice fly. Shayne Willson singled to put runners at the corners and an RBI groundout from Burton, who also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 3-0.

The Griffs put the game away in the seventh when Mailloux led off with a triple and would score on a one-out sacrifice fly from Burton. Joseph followed with a single and Kevin Mahoney doubled to put runners at the corners. Burke tripled to center to score both runs.

Davis, the 2008 MAAC Rookie and Pitcher of the Year, threw just 65 pitches in seven innings to improve to 4-2 on the season. Davis allowed a leadoff single in the third for the only Iona baserunner, as he didn't walk a batter and struck out seven.

Iona (2-25-1, 2-6 MAAC) took the first game by scoring two in the fourth and four in the sixth. Canisius took the early lead with an RBI single from Mahoney in the first.

Chris Griffin led off the Iona fourth with a single and Dean Dignelli followed with a one-out single, and an error by Joseph allowed Griffin to score and Dignelli to move to third. Colin Lyall scored Dignelli with an RBI single to give Iona a 2-1 lead.

The Gaels recorded four runs on five hits in the fifth. Nick Rosetti led off with a solo homer to make it 3-1. Griffin added an RBI single and Lyall had a two-RBI double to give the Gaels a five-run lead.

The Griffs would score one in the eighth when Choy scored after Willson reached on an error. Canisius got the two leadoff batters on base in the ninth, but Iona starter Brian Callahan retired the next three batters to close out his complete game.

Alex MacKenzie (2-2) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in seven innings. Matt Weber threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Griffs.

Canisius and Iona will wrap up the series on Saturday, with the nine-inning game scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game Notes: Choy extended his hitting streak to eight games and has at least one hit in 15 of the last 18 games... Joseph has stolen a base in the last three games... Weber has allowed one run in his last 14.1 innings pitched... Davis threw his first career one-hitter, as his previous low for hits allowed in a game was five, which Davis accomplished five times in 2008... Mahoney batted in the seventh spot in the second game, the first time since March 18, that Mahoney wasn't in the cleanup spot in the order... The one hit allowed by Davis was the fewest allowed by Canisius pitching since Mike Bax allowed one hit in nine innings in a 14-1 win over Saint Peter's on April 9, 2005.
