Baseball Drops Series Finale to Radford

The Canisius College baseball team dropped the series finale at Radford on Sunday, as the Golden Griffins (2-6) lost 12-11 to the Highlanders.

Five Golden Griffins hit five home runs in the loss as Shayne Willson led the team offensively with a 3-for-5 effort, three runs scored and two RBI. Connor Burke went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Steve McQuail had two hits for the Griffs and Paul Panik added two RBI.

Kevin Mahoney put Canisius on the board in the first with a solo homer as the Griffs scored in the first six innings of the game. Radford responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Canisius tied the game in the second with a solo homer from Willson and took the lead in the third on a two-run homer from McQuail that made the score 4-2.

Radford responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, getting a two-RBI double from Mario Duarte and an RBI single from Carl Travers that made the score 5-4.

The Griffs retook the lead in the fourth with three runs, as Panik singled home Willson and Burke hit a two-run homer. Radford scored once in the bottom of the fourth before Canisius plated two runs in the fifth. Willson singled home Mahoney, Brian Gibbs followed with a single that moved Willson to third and a sacrifice fly from Panik made the score 9-6.

Radford scored another single run in the bottom of the fifth, and Burke made the score 10-7 in the sixth when Burke scored on a wild pitch.

The score stayed that way until the eighth when Radford scored five runs to take a 12-10 lead. After the leadoff batter was retired, five straight Radford batters reached base with a two-RBI single from Jeff Kemp off Willson, who came into the game from right field, getting the Highlanders within one. A fielder's choice tied the game at 10-10 as Brett Mollenhauer scored from third. Raphael Turner was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a two-RBI single from Nick Minter proved to be the game-winning hit.

Canisius scored once in the top of the ninth, on a two-out, solo home run from Brian Burton, but that would be the only hit in the ninth for the Griffs.

Mike Goemans started for the Griffs and allowed seven runs, six earned, and 11 hits in six innings of work. Aaron Boag worked 1.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs. Willson (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in 0.2 innings.

Canisius concludes its four-game trip at West Virginia on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
