Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Radford

The Canisius College baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Radford on Saturday, falling 6-3 in the opener and 26-1 in the nightcap.

Radford jumped on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-RBI double from Raphael Turner. Canisius responded by scoring single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Alec Cabello had an RBI single in the fourth, Connor Burke tied the game with an RBI double in the fourth and Kevin Mailloux put Canisius ahead with an RBI groundout in the fifth.

The score stayed 3-2 in favor of Canisius until the bottom of the ninth when the first two Radford batters reached ? after a leadoff single from Rick Hoogstraten and Matt Hillinsger was hit by a pitch. After Ryan McGorman got Tyren Rivers to pop out, Brett Mollenhauer walked to load the bases. Jeff Kemp hit a walkoff grand slam for Radford to give the Highlanders the win.

Senior Alex MacKenzie went 7.1 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, three walks and striking out three. McGorman (0-2) took the loss by allowing four runs in one inning of relief.

In the second game, Radford jumped on Canisius starter Shane Davis (1-1) in the first inning, scoring nine unearned runs. The Highlanders hit five home runs in the game, getting three-run homers from Turner and Kemp in the first.

After a solo homer from Kevin Mahoney in the top of the second, Radford scored nine more runs in the second, with all of these runs being earned. A grand slam by Rivers chased Davis, and made the score 14-1. Freshman Ryan Fennell made his Canisius debut and went two innings, allowing nine runs. Matt Weber relieved Fennell and allowed three runs, two earned, in three innings.

Cabello, Burke and Perry Silverman led Canisius with three hits on the day.

Cansius and Radford close out the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
