Baseball Opens Home Schedule with 7-3 Win

The Canisius College baseball team

opened the 2009 home schedule with a 7-3 victory over the University at

Buffalo at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday.

The Canisius offense started quickly as leadoff hitter Perry Silverman greeted Buffalo starter Chaz Mye with a solo homer on the first pitch to the Golden Griffin lineup. After Steve McQuail drew a walk, Kevin Mailloux followed with a two-run homer to left center, making the score 3-0.

Canisius (11-11) extended the lead to 5-0 with a two-run second. Brian Gibbs started the inning with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Branson Joseph drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Andrew Russo singled home Gibbs and moved to second as the throw went to third, with Joseph beating the tag. Silverman grounded out to short, scoring Joseph to give Canisius the five-run lead.

Buffalo (8-13) scored once in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Eric Flynn, and then scored twice in the sixth. The Bulls got RBI singles from Rob Lawler and Jacob Rosenbeck to make the score 5-3.

The Griffs added two insurance runs in the eighth. Shayne Willson singled to left with one out and Ian Choy walked to put runners at first and second. Willson and pinch runner Will Chomicki executed a double steal, with the throw to third going into left field and allowing both runners to score.

Matt Weber started for the Griffs and threw three scoreless innings. Ryan McGorman allowed three runs in three innings of relief. Alek Brown pitched a scoreless inning of relief while Shayne Willson threw two scoreless innings to get his third save.

Canisius opens its conference schedule this weekend, when the Golden Griffins host Marist. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday, with game time set for 12 p.m.
