Baseball Loses Series Finale at Bucknell

The Canisius College baseball team saw its season-long four-game winning streak come to an end in the series finale at Bucknell on Sunday, as the Golden Griffins lost 13-6 to the Bison. Canisius drops to 10-10 overall and ends its Spring Break trip with a 7-4 record.

Bucknell (7-12) scored four runs in the second by not getting a hit, taking advantage of three Canisius errors and three walks. Canisius starter Nathan Linseman walked Andrew Loucks to start the inning and then committed an error on a sacrifice bunt to put runners at first and second. Linseman then walked the next two batters to force in a run. Alek Brown replaced Linseman and induced a double play to get the first two outs of the inning. An error by Kevin Mahoney extended the inning as B.J. LaRosa scored on the play. After a balk by Brown and an error by Kevin Mailloux, Bucknell executed a double steal to make it 4-0.

Canisius got on the board in the fourth with an RBI double from Ian Choy to make it 4-1 and tied the game with three runs in the fifth. Mailloux started the inning with a double and moved to third on an error. Mahoney singled home Mailloux and moved to second on a single from Shayne Willson. Steve McQuail was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Brian Burton singled home two runs to tie the game at 4-4. However, Bucknell reliever Chris Yamaguchi got Choy to pop out and Brad Medici to ground into a double play to end the Canisius rally.

Bucknell struck right back with a three-run bottom of the fifth getting two sacrifice flies and an RBI single. The Bison added a single run in the sixth and then two more runs in the seventh to make the score 10-4.

The Griffs scored twice in the eighth, with Brian Gibbs doubling to right with one out and scoring on a double from Branson Joseph. Mailloux flew out to right, advancing Joseph 90 feet and Joseph scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-6.

Bucknell added three more runs in the eighth to put the game away.

Brown (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings of work while striking out five and walking zero. Yamaguchi (3-0) picked up the win for Bucknell, allowing three runs in four innings of relief.

Canisius concludes its 22-game stretch away from home on Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins play at St. Bonaventure. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
